If you think driveways may be too long then avoid corner lots too! We have a pretty large corner lot for in town and then two double garages with driveways in front - all need shovelling

If you have a big lot, then doesn't it follow you have a big driveway? Ours is Y shaped and about 150 ft long. 40 mins or so with the snowblower. No bother.

But does it need to be long? Ours is quite wide but it needn't be so long.

If the garage was nearer the front, the drve needing snow clearing would be much shorter and the area behind the garage would provide an even bigger yard.

Of course, what one saves on snow clearance would probably result in more grass cutting.

Ours needs to be long so that it reaches the house and garage from the road.

Thats what I said before, if the drive wasn't long then the house would be closer to the road, and that would wrong unless you wanted the house clsoer to the road and then it would be right

Well (not wishing to state the bleedin' obvious too much), the house is set, moreorless in the middle of an acre lot. So the drive has to be long enough to get from the road to the house otherwise it's a bit of a long walk with the groceries......

One leg of the Y goes to the house and Mrs AX's garage, the other, longer leg goes to the detached man garage which is alongside the house and about 10ft behind it. It is a big drive. It does take a lot of snowclearing which is why one has to tools for the job!

Quite the estate and there's me thinking you lived in one of those skinny wooden townhouses.

Oh, we're very much the poor white trash of our neighbourhood. Small house, big lot. And a big drive of course.

Round here the houses are mostly on double lots but while the houses are within ten meters of the sidewalk, most of the driveways go to garages around the back when they needn't go that far.

The point from the OP seems to be why not alongside the houses instead. Seems a fair question. They do seem to be describing what's in my area rather than all you wealthy types in your mansions.
