Back to the original topic of User Names on forums, I believe anonymity breeds discourtesy. When I've been in a huff, I've posted remarks that I would not have made if I'd been using my real name. My impression that I could hide behind my User Name (illusory though that impression may have been) weakened the inhibitions that otherwise would have persuaded me to be polite.

A few months ago I read an article by a guy who stated what I've just stated above and who challenged everyone to use their real name on Internet forums.

When I move to BC, I'll change my User Name on this forum. I'm seriously considering switching to my real name.

But don't you think that anonymity also breads honesty? And isn't that in turn one of the most entertaining things about this forum? Yes of course people post remarks that they might not post of their real identity was revealed and there were "accountable" for what they posted in the real world. And for my mind that would be a shame. There are two great things about this forum:
1) Informative
2) Entertaining

If everyone was sooo polite it would still be informative but it would also be really dull.

PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE WORLD DULL JUDY!

<reconsiders the slightly offensive nature of this post but then, on grounds of anonymity, decides to go ahead and post it anyway!>

Slightly off topic but on the subject of honesty and rudeness - I was discussing the other day with my granddaughter, whether you could tell a good friend something kind of non-complimentary about her. I said that it would be really hard to do without offending your friend.

This came up because there was an obituary in the paper and we knew the girl. She worked at the local grocery store and we noticed that she had tiny little piggy eyes and put these big black lines around them which accentuated their pigginess!

Anyway, my granddaughter said that she would tell a friend if her makeup was awful like that, but she wouldn't say "you have ugly little piggy eyes and those black lines make them look worse" she would suggest that perhaps she try brown eye shadow instead or something like that - find a nice way of saying it without making her friend feel bad.

I think on this board people are like that - they tell the truth, but they are not offensive with it. That is why I like it.

i take this a completely different way. the anonymity factor~

to me it isnt' or may not be about what some may say and who may be offended etc..but rather for some people...who have ex spouses....nutty girlfriends...psycho ex boyfriends etc...etc...and their family members.~..may not want them to be able to find them so easily on the internet..and knowing all of their bussiness etc.....:)

so there can be many reasons why some may not wish to use real names or reveal themselves........not being paranoid...or deceiful...just sensible for themselves and those close to them, depending on their own personal circumstances.

I used to be a named contact for press releases for a number of previous employers, so my name and contact information was all over Google a few years back; now most of my stuff is deep in the archive and there are a couple of much more widely-googled namesakes out there.

I use my real name on a couple of forums that are related to my work, and to which I (legitimately ;)) contribute during work time - it's one of the prerequisites of those forums that real identities and verifiable work email addresses are used to sign up. But then, those are closed forums with a controlled subscriber base, and my contributions are more "ex officio" than anything I add here - one reason I like this board is that the very anonymity allows people to be more opinionated than they could be under a different system, which leads to better debate.

I think we manage pretty well not to be too rude to each other, too - either the mods are doing an excellent job (which, of course, they are, he says ingratiatingly), or we're all just fundamentally lovely people (which, of course, we are...). Or possibly both :D

I also try not to post here anything which I wouldn't gladly say in person. IMHO that has less to do with concerns over privacy than with common courtesy. A non-specific username just makes it easier to say stuff that one might not want a colleague, employer or journalist to be able to track back to me or to claim to represent the views of my company.
