I figure early to mid spring and early to mid fall will be the best times of the year to venture out into the area walking wise, summers are a little too hot and winters probably too cold.

What is the local info on bear safety while hiking there? I suppose if you had Charlee with you, she'd scare them away.

They didn't have any warning signs like parts of the coast do, so I guess that is an improvement....lol

Of course there are bears around.

From the government website it says if you encounter a bear to:

Stay Calm
Back up slowly, never turning your back or run away
Do not stare directly at the bear, the bear will see this as a challenge.
Give the bear space and don't block access to its food, cubs, or block the bears escape

If a bear approaches or charges:

Do not run
Use bear spray if you have some
play dead or fight back

Also depends on what kind of attack it is
  • Defensive attack
Usually, bears charge or attack because they are feeling threatened. Use your bear spray. If you don’t have bear spray and the bear makes contact with you – roll on your stomach, cover the back of your neck, remain still and play dead, they will lose interest and leave. Do NOT run!
  • Predatory attack
In rare cases, a bear may see a human as prey and stalk you along a trail. In these cases, try to escape into a building, car or up a tree. If you cannot escape and the bear charges, use your bear spray, lacking that, use anything at your disposal to fight off the bear (rocks, sticks, hiking poles).

When we lived in Squamish, I saw lots of bears, that town has so many bears. I think they recently captured a small grizzly in town.

This happened in Coquitlam recently in the Vancouver region, a jogger encountered a bear, and the bear well tapped her leg, wasn't showing aggression, seemed more curious, but she did end up running, which is a no no, but the bear wasn't interested in chasing her, seemed to be more curious than anything.

Cougars concern me more than bears do, chances are you wont know one is around until its attacked you, they excel at stalking.

Don't you just need to run faster than the person you're with?

I knew a tree planter who ran into so many bears he started carrying a sawed-off shotgun slung over his back. I suppose it's a case of situational response. What I've been told is stand sideways to provide a smaller outline and back away slowly, speaking soft comforting words "Get the **** away from me, you vile creature." When attacked I suppose either fight back (see below how they recommend different responses for black and brown bears) or if unable to put up a fight, curl into a ball and try to protect your head with your arms. They can run as fast as a race horse, so forget about running unless there's someplace to go real close.

How the **** do you manage not to stare at a bear that you have suddenly just encountered. Surely you want to see what the bear is doing and plan your next move? How does a bear react to your crapping yourself?
