Stewart,

Are there many family sized properties to rent in Winnipeg and if so, how much do they normally charge for a 4bed with Garage?

Which areas in Winnipeg normally have fewer mozzies and do a lot of the properties generally have mosquito window screens?

I've never lived in Winnipeg, but the mosquitos are about the same as in Regina, where I live and all houses have window screens on any window that opens.

With some older houses, they have removable windows that you put on in the winter and take off in the summer. I can't remember exactly how they work. My son had them on his house but as the windows were all rotten, they have had them replaced with "normal" modern wood windows with screens in them so they don't have to climb up a ladder in the fall to put the storm windows on.

They don't like to spray in Wolseley so I'd imagine there would be more there. I never had as many bites in Winnipeg as I've had here though... don't be put off by the jokes, it can be worse elsewhere!

A "rule of thumb" for renting in Winnipeg is $1 per sg.ft per month, so for a 4-bed house you are looking at a fairly broad range from $900 to $2,000 per month. The Winnipeg Free Press classified is the best place to look for house rentals.

You can keep the population down around your own home, a "fogger" can be bought from Canadian Tire or at more cost you can get a "Mosquito Magnet".
Screens are standard on opening windows.

Though Winnipeg gets a bad press about the Mozzies its a problem throughout the vast majority of Canada. We don't get Black Flies which for me more is a way more unpleasant pest as they really hurt, swell up big.

Thanks for the pointers Anita, great if you can get some photos up

Andrew - whats a 'piled' foundation and would realtors know which properties have it?

I've spent the last day and a half (inbetween nappy changes of course!) uploading some of the photos we took on our recce to Winnipeg back in June. You can either check out our Blog (which is very new so not much to read but lots of piccies!) entitled 'Gambles Go West', or look on my photobucket site here:-

Just click on 'next' to scroll through them.

Enjoy!

Nice pics. And a great story about how Winnie-the-Pooh got his name!! (If you don't know, you'll find the answer in Anita's pictures!!!)

no worries - happy to share! ;)

yeah the beach was fab, we kept forgetting we were by a lake and at times thought we'd woken up (from our sunbathing naps) on a beach in the south of france! (you can't see the sides or end of the lake, just a mass of water - with waves!).

i'm a big 'pooh' fan so was thrilled to 'meet' the statue of the bear himself

Apologies Anita for not thanking you sooner for posting the pictures; we were on holiday.
My wife and I have just viewed your photos and it seems like a lovely place, looks like some of the beaches we saw in the Algarve!
Has made us all the more fired-up to visit. Thinking about going in October as my wife is a teacher and any other time in the near future will be difficult.

Any tips for our recce would be appreciated, that B&B you took a photo of would be a nice start

River Heights looks really nice, looking forward to a drive round the neighbourhoods.

Interesting pics - I don't know anything about architecture but I do enjoy looking at all the different styles when walking round a city :)

Great Photos.

I'm very disappointed in the New Hydro tower, it just looks Grey and dull, especially when compared with the style of the Remand Center.

Looking around the City you can find some nice architecture, both old and modern, though it is mostly hidden between boring rectangles with flat roofs.
