An opportunity perhaps.
They already are but you wouldn't expect an announcement.

I went on an awareness training session that included passports. Quite an eye-opener.

One of the lines isn't a line.

I took my cue from the guardian today where it said non PC humour was okay in the right context.

It can't be a Union Jack unless the passport is a ship. A Union flag would be ok though.

Something that stands out from the normal drab passport tones would be good. Maybe aqua blue or turquoise. Better yet, maybe replace it with a card like a driving licence.

The new Canadian passports are actually hardcover... My biometric Canadian one is actually thicker/stiffer than my Maltese EU one.

It will be interesting to see what comes of everything.

So glad you mentioned Stefan Zweig - his observations of European society & structure are more pertinent than ever.

£490 million actually, although it has nothing to do with Brexit. De La Rue is the current manufacturer, having been awarded a ten year £400 million contract in 2009, so the new contract would have been put out to tender for 2019 whether we were leaving the EU or not. Still, stoopid Leavers, eh?

It can be any colour we fancy post-Brexit. All passports are a standard size regulated by the ICAO. A separate passport card be issued however although since it can't be stamped or visas inserted it's of limited use.

Well, yes, but do you think it will cost the same or more had we not been leaving?

The reports say there are various security changes every five years. But the basics - size, colour, the EU bits etc - appear to be quite similar if my last 30 years worth are anything to go by.

If the basics change, in a way that they would otherwise not have needed to, my guess is that this will cost more than it would otherwise have needed to.

I doubt the colour and other info will cost that much to change, in fact Canada uses a British company to make the passport cover. Maybe the UK can use the same one?

To be honest I'm not overly bothered about the changes to the passport anyway, I never really go to the UK so don't see much point in renewing it, especially seen as I can travel there on my Canadian passport if I have to.

You're making the same point in reverse. Adopting a similar style to one already being produced by a company would make sense and likely save money. Using a company not producing them at all or using a company that makes passports but asking them to make different ones would likely cost more. And the changes that would need to be made each time the company moved between one and the other could result in costly errors with additional security risks.

The interior is wholly redesigned every five years or so. Why would simply changing the colour of the cover and removing the words 'European Union' from the front somehow make it more expensive? I've given you the figures - it's exactly the same when adjusted for inflation.
