Our Fishes!

Have just laid eggs! Whoopee!

It's the 3rd time they have acheived this, 1st 2 times the baby fishes all got eaten within a couple of weeks. Now, the parents finished off the main predater after the last batch so hopefully we'll have some baby fishmies make it to adulthood this time!

What sort of fishes? Tropical or cold water?

We have tropical. Convict cichlids. One big (the daddy) albino and 3 stripey ones, the one we have with the darkest stripes is the mummy. I wouldn't be surprised if we lost one of the little ones as her stripes have virtually disappeared. :(

We also have a Puffer in another tank and daughter has boy and girl Beta's (in a huge vase).

Do you have fishes to?

We had a large garden pond in the UK - we had quite a lot of baby fish appear! But we had to sell all the fish as the new buyer has small children and was filling the pond in. Broke my heart to see the fish go but they went to a very good home - the new owners even sent us photos of the fish in their new home!

We are thinking of getting an aquarium but will wait until we have bought a house. Not sure if we will have tropical or coldwater fish - don't know much about tropicals.

I'll be back to ask advice when we get aroung to buying the fish:D

Jo, whatever you do, when you buy a tank and fishes DON'T get conned into buying CYCLE. We couldn't keep any fish alive until we stopped using that crap. Any fish forum will say much the same!

Thanks - I'll bookmark this thread for future reference:) I HATE fish dying on me! We lost several very large orfe a couple of years ago when the weather was very hot (in the UK). The pond pump must have packed up overnight and they were all floating the next morning as they are vulnerable to lack of oxygen. It was a mightmare:eek:

We had some live-bearers in our communal tank; Platies I seem to remember, and we had the same thing happen.

Then I went and got a little "nursery" tank with fine grills, that floated inside the main tank, and when I thought a female was ready to burst I put her in there until the babies were born. Then I took mum out and let the babies get to a certain size in the nursery.

When I thought they looked big enough not to be eaten I let them out into the main tank.

The other fish must have been looking forward to that day. By next morning the youngsters were all gone, except for one little thing that managed to hide in the foliage and grow to adulthood unscathed! :p

We had some guppies that did the same - the gouramis ate all the babies!

A nice mix! You may find that the angel fish and gouramis attack every thing else though:ohmy: We have had all the above apart from the cherry barbs, we gave up with that sort and bought 2 puffer fish - one puffer killed the other and was swimming arounf in a 55g tank for nearly a year on it's own. We got him a smaller tank to be getting on with as he is still only about 2 inches in size and went for the convicts - easier than goldfish to keep!

The cherry barbs are in a 29 gal tank along with the betta and frog.

The only 'smaller' fish in the 55 gal are the Zebra Danios and they are WAAAY too zippy for the angels and gouramis.

Although all the angels are only interested in eating my plants and the one gourami just loves to swim around in circles... there's nothing wrong with it, he zips around the tank, but seems to prefer swiming in circles looking at his reflection.

Was thinking of getting a red tailed shark too, need to wait till the angels grow a little first.

I was going to warn about gouramis too .... some are more warlike than others, but we did have a couple we had to take back to the store before they killed everything including eachother!!!!

some species of barb do not make for good communal dwellers either!!!
