Maybe that's it... Maybe I'm losing my engineer-iness because I'm not actually doing R&D any more... Oh wow - maybe there's hope for a complete cure?

Image 2.......from an artistic point of view there's more to hold my interest. I think it's also slightly sharper.

Very nice shots, Steve. I was up there in 2005 - cold up there, ain't it!
I prefer image 1; I like the way the mist is framing the cone. Howver, right now I'm using an extraordinarily crappy monitor, so I can't see very much of the foreground in either image. I might change my opinion when I look at these at home.
When you were driving up did you see the cyclists heading down?

Actually Bill it was quite nice up there that day as evidenced by this pic it's a rare shot of me, I'm the goof on the left.
Yep saw lots of cyclists going down and as we were walking to the observation area at the very top 10,075' we were passed by a fellow on a bicycle who had cycled all the way to the top from the valley floor in one go.
Cheers and thanks to all of you.
Steve

The composition conforms to the golden section/rule of thirds business and so is more pleasing to the eye. My personal comment would be to prefer it with some sky cropped off so that there is very little blue. But thats being picky as its a great photo.

#2 for me, though I may even prefer the DB version.
And for the record I am an engineer according to the North American usage though have never thought of myself as one (officially an Enterprise Architect whatever that means!)
