One way trip to Mars - would you?

One way trip to Mars - would you?
Well it's a bit late to apply now as they are whittling down the shortlist (currently 75 Canadians on it) to become part of a team to colonise Mars.

Apparently going ahead in 2025 (all relying on sufficient funding - might fall down there).
I think they are personally nuts, from my limited knowledge of space travel (ok very limted) we've only just sent up a bloody rover with an umbrella on top of it - let alone know enough to start a civilisation.
One woman from Edmonton who made it through to the next round said
Edmontonian Christy Foley, 32, and her 33-year-old husband, who have no children, both sent in applications. She was selected, and he wasn't.
“I'll miss him, but he's going to reapply,” the government worker told CTV Edmonton. “(Mars One's) message is very much ‘Don't give up, follow your dreams.'”
Nice I'll miss him but he's going to reapply
At least put some decent eye candy in there for gods sake, can you imagine if this hair brained scheme is successful, the kids they will eventually have to produce are going to be downright fugly.

Lots of people have been "selected", to the point where selection is more about getting media coverage than really finding nutters who want to go.
The thing is I actually want to support this but I'm getting the feeling it's turning into some kind of space cult rather than a realistic plan to colonise Mars.

Hell no! Too much I haven't seen on this planet, and I would miss everyone I know terribly... It's not like moving abroad when you can always visit and such, this is one way, one way, like never coming back... Never. My visualization of mars is like a huge fireball, so that doesn't help either

I can imagine the trip there to be like driving through the prairies. Awesome for the first 5 minutes and then for days (or in this case years) wanting to pluck out your eyeballs with a blunt spanner.
