Is it just an eastern Canadian thing? I've never seen milk sold in a bag in BC supermarkets.

We stayed with relatives on our 1st visit to Ontario in 2005, they had milk in a bag back then, We thought it was a great idea andsomuch easier to store in the fridge. What a fab idea I say!!!!!

As I said before on another 'milk-in-a-bag' thread, we had milk in bags in Scotland 25 years ago. Can't recall when it was phased out though. I didn't realise we were cutting edge!

As for the BBC's question "Can milk-in-a-bag replace the traditional doorstep pint?", I suspect that doorstep bottle delivery is very much a declining tradition. Most milk is probably bought in cartons or plastic jugs from the supermarket.

Right. Lunchtime at work, and it's time for a nice cup of tea with horrible powdered creamer...

i think the milk in bags are great idea, you can freeze the bags and not have to think at 6am in morning :curse::curse: the kids drank all the milk last night and i cant have my caffine
Easy to stack in freezer, right next to the stack of bread, going to tsco tmz to see if we can get some

Age old addage people dont like change, they like to stick to what they know! Although as this site is full of excitement hungry immigrants keen to go on an adventure some of the comments here suprise me. After all its just a bag you put in a jug, cut the corner of and use that us folks in Canada have mastered and been happy with for years.

If it werent for change though we would still be living in a cave!

Good God, milk in a bag! Next they will be forcing you to bring your own plastic bags to the supermarket.

I'm not going to make another jug comment, but sweet of you to remember I got a nice ceramic one by accident - came with utensils I wanted to buy anyway, and I've got a grey one for skimmed... but exciting they're not. Still, that UK thing looks far too complicated

At the risk of revealing a domestic side I try to deny exists...I freeze milk in Rubbermaid pouring containers already. With the amount of milk my lot get through a week (six four litre jugs), I really have no choice, if I want an emergency supply. If milk in bags lowers my astronomical grocery bill, good!

Well i tried, sorry but tesco dont do them, i have to go shopping at waitrose or sainsburys and no chance there, so looks like i will have to wait until we move over to be more eco friendly

Doesn't look like the local stores will be bringing them anytime soon either

Milk Bags were trialed in the UK in the 1970's. As a kid growing up, it was somewhat of a cheap thrill to go and get a bag rather than a bottle of milk. Can't say it tasted any different to the bottled stuff though.
How complicated can it get to drink the stuff though. When he said I'll just read the instructions, I thought he was going to say "Pick up bag, cut off corner, pour milk into jug." Who'd have thought you needed an 'ology' to get a dribble of milk.
What are they going to try next, making people carry a large milk jug to the local dairy?

They do overcomplicate things dramatically. What happened to "drop bag in jug, snip corner, pour"?

OH's parents are freaking insane about hygiene, length of time food can be opened in the fridge, etc. etc. etc. His mother almost had a heart attack when she saw the milk in a bag...but personally this seems significantly more hygienic than having milk in a glass bottle that has been used/washed a million times by other people, not to mention milk sitting out in the sun for 4 hours from the time it's delivered to when it goes into the fridge.

What I don't understand is why people keep commenting about "how can you drink milk out of a bag?" As someone pointed out - you don't drink from a bag, you pour it into a glass!
