I am not sure they can give a reasonable estimate yet of how much could leak out. They are claiming that it will take another 2 months or so in order to dig the relief well, so it could potentially take a while. Hopefully they can get the 2nd cap to work.

Hopefully indeed. What a mess.

Apologies for not posting anything more erudite.

So here's an awkward thought.. does anybody here even feel remotely culpable for the environmental damage, given that we are 'over-consumers' in the most hydrocarbon-rapacious continent on Earth?

One hopes they can get the 2nd cap to work. They can do it miserably for all I care.

I feel indirectly responsible, yes. If I really cared about the environment I'd make an effort not to be so damaging to it, using less oil would be a better contribution than just smashing up the occasional windmill.

Re: The Oil Spill

Absolutely, yes. In fact I spend time and effort trying to minimise my own 'carbon footprint' (if anything just to show my kid that I'm trying to do the 'right thing'). For example, last year's Earth Hour continued on for about a month here (as best we could, anyway).

On a related note, here's a movie I stumbled upon last night, I didn't get the chance to watch it all yet but there is some very interesting commentary along with spectacular footage all relating to our rapid consumption of natural resources.

Rather than embed it, I've linked it as there are HD viewing options.

I'm wearing a cardy today and the thermostat is at 66. Mind you if I was in England the heating wouldn't be on at all and my motivation is my wallet not the environment.

Fred drifting.....I was pondering temperature and ability to cope with it whilst watching the live streaming talking heads on the BBC news election coverage. Everyone in London is wrapped up in coats & according to the Met Office it's a balmy 10C. This morning it was 2C in the bright fog here in Newfoundland and I got into the car in shirtsleeves. Perhaps I have become aclimatised?!

It's the sun, it's warmer here for the same temperature.

I said 'Bright fog'. Although it was a bright morning here, there was very little sunlight and no warmth making it through.;)

As the oil continues to flow unabated despite the efforts of BP here's an interesting link to sort of put it in perspective.

It's actually quite stunning.

I like the oil drum. It's a great website - lots of knowledge presented in a way that oil lay people (like me) can understand.

Yes, It's a site I've been reading a lot recently whilst following events in the GOM. Couldn't agree more about the way knowledge is presented for us lay folk!;)

Hah, I was tempted to post earlier than if one centred in on Toronto it would be a general improvement on the place but I thought that a bit tasteless. Glad to see you know no boundaries.;)

What about Wales? That's the unit normally used for the measurement of areas affected by environmental destruction.

As the oil is a liquid, might i request 'Olympic-sized swimming pools'?

Just been watching CBC my feelings on the spill are thus:

Maybe if these hypocrit Americans are so concerned about oil spills now they will use less and start making an effort to take part in slowing the destruction of the world.

I don't think so..................

BP= Big Polluter. I say a case of pot and kettle or being in bed with the devil.......
