NS: In search of Sausages and Bacon
 

Living near Halifax and would be interested in people's views on where you can get decent British style Sausages and Back Bacon.

Also, what top tips do people have for getting those british foods you miss (by the way, we have found Pete's Frootique in Bedford and their English foods section).

I can't see the point of paying over the odds for British food items.

Superstore and Sobey's both have limited selection of English food - Hobnobs, McVities, mint sauce to name a few
apart from pete's, don't know of anywhere else you can get sausage and bacon - as RICH said, you just have to get used to what's on offer locally

or go to a local butcher, take him a picture of a piece of "British" bacon and ask him to cut you some like that :huh:

I can if you enjoy eating them as I doubt the extra few bucks really makes that much difference to the average ex-pats food budget.

In terms of bacon, streaky is best anyway so I'm quite happy with what comes as standard here.

safeway used to sell pork sausages that were fairly close, although I've not had them in years. After a few years, you don't seem to yearn things all that much. And when I go to Blighty, I gorge myself for the first few days, wonder what the fuss was all about and then miss sushi!

NS has a huge expat population- i'd be amazed if there arent any English butchers at the local farmers markets.
We have an English guy here in Alberta who does "proper" bacon, although I've been disappointed with it personally- sausages too dry/bland, bacon unsmoked... but I'm just fussy.

Seems we're in a minority, but I'm with you on that..... Streaky is much easier to crisp up and that's the best way to have bacon imo!

Although I can't help with NS, you can get that stuff in Vancouver. I don't eat bacon very often but when I do, I get Danish smoked bacon from the Granville Island. There is also a Belgium meat place that often has a selection of British sausages, after extensive research, I found the Cumberlands are the best.

That hackneyed 'when in Rome' attitude gets a bit tedious. And try telling that to the Chinese, Indian or other ethnic group. The OP only wanted a bit of bacon and some sausages.

I haven't actively tried to assimilate or anything, just can't be bothered anymore and lost interest, not to mention discovering other things, like sushi. I also have a stomach condition (dyspepsia) and pay a price for indulgences, so I try to watch what I eat.

I agree that you can find pretty much anything in Vancouver. There's even a sweet shop in gas town that has all the usual hard candies, such as pear drops and what have you and one on 4 th that sells everything from walkers to turkish delights.

Celtic Treasures in Point Grey has a wide stock of Brit stuff and there is a Brit butcher here on the North Shore, so doable. When I first moved here, my mate worked for a Brit in a Butchers shop on Robson, sadly pulled down long ago now.

Damn, I'm craving a full cooked breakfast now!

No, the OP was very specific, they wanted British style bacon and sausage - there is no problem getting Canadian style bacon and sausage here in NS.
NS has a relatively small population, less than 1 million, and one of the smallest expat populations in Canada, so apart from one or 2 specialist shops, and the small selection in local supermarkets, you are not going to find specific items from the UK, so it is very much a case of "when in Rome"

I dont really understand your argument. You seem to be saying that "english" bacon and sausages are available, but not to buy them?
Canadian sausages are crap- unless you like your sausages mixed with brown sugar/maple syrup, or spicey italian style. Not everyone likes the streaky bacon either. There's nowt wrong with asking for something else....

not sure how you read that, can't see anywhere were I state goods are available but you can't buy them:confused:

the OP asked very specifically if people knew where they could buy English style bacon and sausage in NS. There is a shop here called Pete's Frootique, that the OP already know about, that sells imported goods. The shop also sells produce they make themselves for the store, including different cuts of bacon, sausages, pork pies etc.
Apart from that store, in NS, you have no alternative that I'm aware of, except to buy Canadian bacon and sausage. There is a weekly market in Halifax that may sell English style bacon and sausage, but I've never seen any there.

Hi, I am an ex pat living in Canada, I do understand the withdrawl symptoms, try the Brit Store, they mail out stuff and they are good. The other one we use is The British Corner Shop also good and a bit cheaper than the first. Good Luck:)
