When I arrived in Canada some 52 years ago I’d never seen /experienced people carrying styrofoam cups of coffee and even tea into their workplace. And I quickly learned that virtually every restaurant and coffee shop provided the service. It just wasn’t available/done in my area of UK and I don’t think elsewhere either.
There was no Timmies at that time. I think I have probably been through the complete process. In the UK, coffee for me was a Saturday treat using Camp (liquid) coffee made with boiled milk. Coming here and setting up home it was firstly instant coffee followed quickly by the percolated type for a few years, then came home drip coffee makers, a number of which we’ve had over the years. Now it’s the Keurig machine. As someone said further up, a tad more expensive than homemade dripped. However it’s meets our needs to a Tee. I used to drink copious amounts of the stuff but now not so much. Coffee (mug) for breakfast and tea for lunch is the norm.

I don't 'get' drive through coffee, I prefer to order at the counter and sit in - my wife loves the people watching opportunities! I do like the 'new' Tim Hortons dark roast, actually almost decent.

I buy coffee beans, bought a 1 Kg bag of espresso beans from Fresh Co for $9.99. Grind them as needed and either use a cafetiere if in a hurry or one of the cheap Italian stove top gizmos and make espresso - it doesn't take up any counter space and is really quite quick. I don't 'get' these big expensive machines where you have to buy their pods, not really any quicker IMHO.

We bought a Flexibrew which allows you to use pods or brew your own.

My daughter and I like going to an independent pods store near us where you can buy a very wide variety in singles plus they will recycle. It's not something we use all the time but it didn't cost much and from time to time has its place.

Depends who you're making for and how many cups.

If it's just one, the Keurig machine is quicker than instant. It literally is seconds. And only the cup needs washing, no dirty pot or jug. No filters, no mess.

But if you want to do several cups it takes longer. The upside is that each person can get the strength they want without pouring something from one pot that has to be diluted or something that satisfies most but is like coloured water for any who want flavour.

You can buy one for as little as $60.

My favourite coffee is President's Choice Sumatra. The pods give me a strong but smooth cup whereas the ground version I've not been able to get right. It works out @ 50c a pod and my mother in law re-uses it as she likes her coffee weaker.

Yes our machine didn't cost much more than about $60-$80 on offer.

I really don't understand the point of threads about coffee in the Canadian forum.

It's almost impossible to find acceptable coffee there.

I work at a Tim’s and I am constantly amazed at the amount of regular customers who call in more than once a shift. Also those that drive 3-5 miles just to get drinks, most days a week, not on their way to anywhere, just to take home.
I’m not a big coffee or tea drinker, but even coworkers who are, wonder about those folk!
And I know friends who leave a restaurant in the evening, and stop at Tim’s for coffee on the way home 😏

I missed this earlier.

My MIL wants to buy one (she likes to buy things) but I already have a replacement drip machine ready for when I want to replace the current one and the Keurig machine still works well. I'd worry that if one part failed, the whole thing wouldn't work.

There's a Jean Coutu pharmacy store that sells singles and the supermarket sometimes too, but only the same ones normally available. It is a big selection though.

I just stick with the dark roasts.

I can't remember the last time I made instant coffee.

I think it's either ignorance of how to make decent coffee at home or a psychological "treat" or a bit of both.

It only takes a Bialetti pot and bag of ground coffee to produce something decent, but many seem to think expensive machines are the entry ticket. I know I did for my first three decades, but then again, I didn't start drinking the stuff until I was 30.

Incidentally, had a very nice concoction over the holidays, coffee with a shot of Amaretto. Needs to buy me a bottle of that.

From reading Twitcher's post - and this is just for Tim Hortons - I'm wondering if it's seen as patriotism or something.

If it's a few times a day for some then it's likely less of a treat and more medicinal.

Isn't there a poster, or cartoon or something of someone so unusual that people are gawping at or looking disapprovingly of and there's a caption along the lines of "The man who....(whatever it was)"

The man who didn't like Tim Hortons.

I found this - Woman who admits she's 'not a huge fan' of Tim Horton's coffee disowned by family
A woman named Catherine has been shunned by her friends and family in the wake of her confession that she's "not crazy" about Tim Horton's Coffee.

Comedy sketch it seems.

.
People by marketed products for a variety of reasons, so there could well be an element of 'patriotism' in it, on a brand level or a ritual level.

Not sure if the Barista champions of Canada and the hipster 3rd wave of coffee shops would agree with you.

Granted, Tim Horton's is not going to win any awards other than volume sold but then again Carling is the most popular beer in the UK and that is basically just bland lager.

Quality coffee is easy to get in most urban centres in Canada...its when you get on the road and end up in a small town diner where the coffee isn't too flavourful.

Is it really?

Of all the pubs near where I used to live, near work in three different areas of central Bristol and all the pubs we'd call in after playing "parks" football on the weekends in and around Bristol it came as a shock to finally see something commonly advertised on TV (as well as a major football sponsor) actually available in a Pub just outside Bath (The Globe).

At least it was better than Harp which I could only drink if it had a dash of lime.

Hey the internet doesn't lie.

The UK's Most Popular Beer is Bloody Carling!? | Gizmodo UK

Most countries favourite beers are quite depressing.
