Netflix Sales Tax.

So it looks like the Government are either sending up a trial balloon or seriously considering imposing a sales tax on Canadian Netflix subscribers.

Due to the fact that Netflix is not located in Canada but we receive that service if we subscribe the argument is that it should be taxed which for the Feds would mean the 5% GST rate. The Provinces have not indicated that they would then want to add in their rate and ask the Feds to collect it on their behalf much like they do with purchases imported into Canada that exceed $20.

This would then open up other digital online services such as subscriptions to UK newspaper subscriptions etc.

The federal Liberals, along with the previous Conservative government and the federal NDP, all disavowed the idea of a Netflix tax during the 2015 election. Joly has reiterated that position since.
One problem with a sales tax on foreign content is that it would be hard to enforce, Heritage Canada's briefing note for Joly states.

"Beyond voluntary compliance, little can be done to enforce a sales tax regime, even when a foreign-based company has registered with the relevant tax authority.

The note also suggests that the U.S. may not be willing to help Canada collect a federal sales tax, since it has no federal sales tax of its own.

Canada Moves Closer To Taxing Netflix And Other Streaming Services

It would mean an increase of around 50 cents per month to your Netflix bill.
Do you agree with this?

Have Bhell and Robbers been moaning again then? Upset they had to shutter Shomi, and I suspect CraveTV won't be far behind to be honest. Can't have the C-level types trough getting low on food now can we.

Netflix related, I saw a news report a couple of days ago about their dwindling DVD rental business.

I thought that had been discontinued years ago.
