need to make a decision

hi yall, we are pretty close ( as a family ) to coming to decision about trying life over in canada. been in touch with an immigration agency about skills training etc and i like the sound of it. IF we bite the bullet and go for it the WIFE and i are thinking of coming over to the vancouver area for a week or so( i cant take much time off work just yet). are there many people out there that havnt been in canada that long and how do you like it? love to know how your getting on and adjusting to life? is it worth it? love to hear from anyone.....

Love it.

For Hull and if seeking familiarity think Kitimat. Smelters, fish, logging, one road in <no escape> and interesting locals.

Anywhere else in BC would be progress. perhaps apart from Hope, Trail, Creston.

If one week doesnt seem like much time of work , I suspect canadian vacation alowances might be an eye opener!!!

The wife's been here for 4 months now although I've only been here 1 month myself. It's really cold, I have to get up much earlier than I did in the UK and the beer is more expensive. But I love it here.

I feel like I'm doing what I've always wanted both at home and play. I think it's all about the attitude you come over with, both my wife and I were 100% sure we wanted to leave the UK. Canada seemed the best place to come and we've settled really quickly.

As many people have said on this site many times, if you don't try you won't know

That's very racialisticalist old bean, they've been here since the big noise about HK and that white haired government chap who was sent to sort them out over there.

And a few been here a bit longer, they helped build some big long railway apparently  and if it wasn't for their hard work we British Columbians would all be Merkan now. Proper fact, innit.

Rich.

Its only racialisticalist if you have a problem with the fact I guess.

My only comment would be 1 week is just not enough. It's a long way to come (10 hour flight) and it can take a few days to get used to the time difference and then you will be doing all in reverse. There is so much to see and do you would be really pushing it timewise unless you work out a strict full on itinerary.

But that observation/statistic isn't really telling anything about the 'Chinese' population already in Vancouver and how long people from China have been settling in Vancouver.

That statistic says about 350,000 people came from SE Asia. First off, that doesn't differentiate people from China versus people from other SE Asian countries... Japan, Korea, Tawain, etc and second, say people from China represented 50% of that 350,000. That's a drop in the bucket compared to how many people from China or of Chinese origins there already are in Vancouver.

An excellent novel around a chinese family in BC is called "all that matters" by Wayson Choy.

Many came before the railway seeking gold and exploring. There have been Chinese people in Vancouver from day one. In fact there are a few archeaological theories that people from China were visiting and/or living in the Americas way before that Columbus dude bumped into the Bahamas.
