I have to do 9 exams and have just finished the reading for Foundations. I have now started the reading on Constitutional Law and am hoping to take the 2 in October. Depending how things go, I might try and register for Admin in October, too, as I'm sensing that there is a degree of overlap with the 3. Anyone else in the same boat want to share thoughts/notes/frustrations etc on the material? I was a little surprised by the amount of reading material in Foundations...:blink:

I would definitely take all three as there is quite a lot of overlap. The exams are also quite straightforward - don't be daunted by the amount of material.

Hello, I have just received my assessment back and I have to sit the four compulsory exams. I have been printing off the reading material for Foundations. There is a lot to read! The core text book looks mercifully small though compared to the Administrative Law books which are both whoppers.

I plan to write Foundations, Constitutional and Administrative together in January and Criminal at a later date. I had thought about sitting all four together, but I am not sure if that is optimistic with my current work commitments. I am going to contact the NCA to see if it is still possible to sit exams in London.

I hope to pick up the remaining text books I need during our recce to Calgary

I dunno. One man's "straightforward" is another man's struggle - I would be wary of any advice on this forum that intimates that the whole thing is not one big headache.

Hi all,

I've just come across this thread as I'm researching how I'm going to qualify upon returning to Canada.

I'm a 4th year LLB student at the University of Edinburgh (in Scotland) and plan to return to Toronto to practice upon graduation. I came here straight out of high school and I'm going to graduate with a 2:1.

I'm just curious as to whether anyone is in a similar position as me? I'm hoping the NCA will require me to do around 8-10 exams but I'm nervous that i may require more schooling since Scotland is a hybrid system and because I dont have another degree besides my secondary school diploma. Anyone have any input?

I am new to this forum as well as in Canada.
I was a lawyer in India. But, my legal academic performance was very poor (e.g. i have four trials in second year of law). Now my question is whether NCA will accept my application and what procedure to be follow to apply for NCA. What documents need to be submitted.
And if NCA denies my application what other chance for me to work in legal field in Canada.
Please answer me ASAP.

Hello, you will not be asked about your visa or residency status when you sit the exams. To actually sit the exams you simply need your NCA Candidate number and photo ID such as a passport and driving licence. I sat one in Edmonton Last week and simply had to show my passport on registration.

Hello, there are a couple of 'NCA' groups on Facebook which were set up by other NCA students, you might be find someone with a similar background if you join. There are lots of discussions about the exams and people often post requests for study buddies etc. Let me know if you would like more details. Good Luck

I would caution anyone considering this route as it is widely reported that the federal NCA gate is now effectively starting to constrict, if not shut. You could consider contacting the relevant provincial law society to get their opinion. The NCA has recently had delegates at most major provincial law societies giving their 'reports' on the apparent deluge of foreign law students/lawyers pouring into Canada, especially in Ontario. Young Canadian law students are freaking out at the apparent competition (boo hoo) but good ol' protectionism is alive and well in Canada as it has always been for any trade, vocation or profession. IMHO.

Hi All!

I've just completed my LPC here in Birmingham. I am Canadian and will eventually be going back so I intend on writing the NCA exams. I'm just waiting on my assessment and I predict I'll have to write about 6 exams. I just wanted to check in and say hi. Are any of you writing exams in January? Or have any of you just written exams in 2014? Your insights would be greatly appreciated.:thumbsup:
