Nanaimo BC..What do you think?

Does anyone live in Naniamo? I would like to hear from anyone living there and get some feedback on what people think of the area in general. I personally I think it's a great place and I'm thinking of buying an ocean property on Hammond bay Road. All feedback welcome...

What about the property market there, I've been offered a good deal on a new block of apartments and some retail units in the same development, just waiting to see how the pacifica condo's affect the rental market. The development is next to the old bank building down town, you may know the area. Cheers.....

Tony, we had a brief look at Nanaimo, the north area by the coast looks particularly impressive concerning property, and the prices are far lower than Victoria!
Not sure about how good it would be to live there as we only really spent a lot of time in Victoria and Comox. I know it claims to be an up and coming area!

I rather live in Victoria given choice. First choice would be Van.

We moved to Nanaimo nearly 4 years ago and ended up buying a property near where you are looking. The area is lovely, plenty of wildlife like deers everywhere and racoons (but that can be said for almost everywhere). The main road by British standards is really quiet even when its busy. There are plenty of things to do if your an outside person, and being central makes it easy to get to places, most of everything you need is here, so trips to Vancouver are kept to a min. You can PM me if you require any further details about the area. Best of luck

Beyond the natural setting - the place is not overly inspiring - and is known locally as Surrey on the Sea. I'd suggest spending some time there first.

If you already think its a great place, and you are going buy there, why do you need anyone else's opinion?

We live in Nanimo and love it although still living with MIL as houses not sold in UK yet. The area you mention is very nice especially if you like the wildlife in your garden. We (when we sell) are considering Cedar which is only 5 mins up the road.
There are some lovely areas around here that are just on your door step. Nanaimo Lakes is our favourite ride out.
Just enough shops as well. I think we are quite central to lots of places. If you need any info on anything feel free to PM us as we are out and about looking at properties and areas most days (early retired)

Pretty much my thoughts when we visited but as with anywhere, you need a chunk of time to find an area you like. When we first arrived we were going to live in the Hammond bay area but 4 months of renting changed our minds :o although I do work in that area & it's handy for buses/shops etc

IMHO Nanaimo is 'getting there' slowly  ... lots of changes over the last year ~ improvements to the harbourfront, the Airport is expanding (smaller shed to bigger shed probs ;)) Cruise ship terminal has the go ahead etc etc ... still a bit 'Salems lot' tho :D
