So Midnight Express then :thumbsup: I remember watching a clip on local TV (the regionalised news slot just after 6.00pm - HTV) of the prison visit with the glass partition between Billy and girlfriend. I don't think whoever was responsible quite realised what was going on. I remember that scene lol |

It's concluded to a degree.. I just found it an unsatisfying ending when it had the potential for more. I did enjoy the majority of it though!
Go and see it - it has rave reviews.. :) |

There was also Pricilla, Queen of the Desert. I also watched Bangkok Hilton, which was a late 1980s movie with Nicole Kidman and Hugo Weaving about a women who gets framed with smuggling drugs and her time in a jail in Thailand (I don't think it was Bangkang - the real Bangkok Hilton as that's a male jail).
It was a good movie if very dated. Big fan of these locked up abroad, prisons abroad stuff. Might explain why I visited 5 different old jails when I went to Australia in 2010 lol. |

No-one I mention it to ever remembers Bangkok Hilton! Was a series though, not a film.
Oh well, either way it was still good and when I downloaded it, it didn't come as a series, it was all rolled into one. |

So, as you were old enough;) did you also see a younger Nicole in the Vietnam series? I've been re-watching lately...albeit I forgot to get back to it. :( |

I just watched "Arrival" - what a strange film.. and it left you hanging somewhat at the end. I enjoyed it (well, I like sci-fi) but felt there was potential for a more satisfying ending..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFMo3UJ4B4g I almost threw my remote at the TV when it abruptly ended. |

Re: Movie Thread: TNG
I watched Lala land this evening...:o
I wanted to see what all the hype was about, why it had been nominated for so many awards. I was determined to hate the damn film but nope, I couldn't :( It was very good- a reimagination of old musicals with modern day actors, just so different to anything else out there. The score was excellent as was the choreography. I'm not at all sure that Gosling and Stone should win best actor Oscars, they just lucked out being in such a great production but, they to were very good.... Shoot...there goes my male credibility score out the window... |

It's central premise about an enigmatic and amoral AI and how it might behave is good. But the film takes itself far too seriously for the amount of suspension of disbelief required to enjoy it. Still, I could maybe have got past the secret hide out shit if the ending wasn't so eye-rolling bad. Had it just been "AI kills antagonist, leaves protagonist to die in a cell. The End", it would have been an OK film rather than a bad one. But no, they had to add an ending that made no sense at all if you think about it for more than 10 seconds. |

Not sure what part of the ending did not make sense. If it's the very last scene of the now gorgeous android standing on the city street corner, people-watching...yeah, that's a bit hokey. Not unlike Dekker & Rachel flying off into the sunset in original Blade Runner. But if it's the broader ending of the AI deceiving the geek and leaving him behind, that's entirely plausible. Maybe my expectations were quite low prior to watching. I'd seen the clips of Ava in the trailers, and thought it looked a bit creepy and fake, but the story really worked for me. |

I realize that I'm in the minority here, but...

It's the blurring of human and AI motivations that was fascinating. Half way into the film I had zero idea on which of the three (tycoon/geek/AI) was orchestrating events.

I didn't have any expectations when watching as I'd never heard of it. Watched in a flight from the UK a while ago. |
Re: Movie Thread: TNG
I enjoyed Ex Machina but I don't recall thinking too deeply.
As for Blade Runner, I'm constantly amazed at how often that gets mentioned in so many top movie lists. The only thing I really liked about it was the commercial for a collection of ...was it watch tunes or something? Like all those K-Tel collections. |

Re: Movie Thread: TNG
I chaperoned for Split yesterday, believing it would be intended for a teen demographic, I had low expectations. Incredible performance by James McAvoy makes the movie worth the ticket+nachos price (and might leave you demanding an Oscar for him, as well as making comparisons with Hopkin's performances of Lecter).
My other recommendation from this weekend is Bone Tomahawk. Gritty, fun dialogue, western, slow in parts, intense, great cast, graphic. (And don't let the phrase "cannibalistic troglodytes" put you off watching it.) |
Re: Movie Thread: TNG
Watched Hacksaw Ridge tonight, quite good.

Re: Movie Thread: TNG
I watched these recently:
Gone Baby Gone (Netflix) Around the midway point I was left in some confusion which was wrapped up at the end. But I felt the story telling leaving myself and my girlfriend both feeling we'd missed something wasn't great. The film overall was pretty good though. Split If I had known it was an M Night Shyamalan film then I wouldn't have bothered. I thought the film was good until the midway point where it went all supernatural and ruined what was a good story! James McAvoy's performance was really good though, you could see on his face the change from personality to personality! |

Was that the only SFW pic you could find when you googled?
I was looking for something suitable to paste the vacuum cleaner onto and there were quite a few like it but too big. I scrolled down quite a few images to find that smaller one and nothing remotely dodgy at all. Maybe not too many pornstars called Henry? Unlike when Henry gets replaced with some other names  |
