Montana - Glacier park

I am taking my parents on a little road trip this summer, we have a week booked in Yellowstone which we are really looking forward to. We were also planning on stopping around the glacier national park area on the way back to Alberta for a few days. I am struggling to land on a suitable location to explore this part of the state.

We are 4 adults and have our 4 year old boy. We really enjoy the outdoors and would prefer to be in a cabin rather than a condo. We were told to look at Whitefish but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? I would prefer to avoid driving an hour one way to get to the park but if there is really not much there I don't want to be stuck in the back of beyond either.

Thanks everyone,
Helen

I looked at google maps to see what was close and Summit Mtn. Lodge has a nasty pop-up ad that got my attention, $150/night for a rustic 4 person but call and see if they have a cot for a 4 yo.

Head to Whitefish/Kalispell, take the Going to the Sun highway on the way back to Alberta. If you go back via Big Chief, you can then visit Waterton too. Stop off and explore anything else that seems like a good idea.

Thanks both, I have trawled through pages of internet stuff, VRBO, Homeaway, hotels, motels... it is times like this when I know there is no substitute for actually having been there in person. Going to the Sun road is definitely on the list.

We have been to Waterton a few times, great place with some excellent hiking.

This is where we tend to stay in Whitefish: Pine Lodge

It has an indoor/outdoor pool with a link between the two. Our kids always enjoy it there.

Big Mountain has lots of hikes. There is a ski lift that operates during the summer too, or you can walk. The interpretive centre at the top is worth a visit, your son will enjoy it. There are a fair number of activities to do at various levels near the base.

Another vote for Whitefish/Kalispell. There are lots of campgrounds with cabins, some you do need your own bedding for.
