Re: A moan. Don't ask me about moving to Canada today
Hey there McMuray.......
Like everyone has said before me, that is really pants that your OH has been let go.................what, may I ask, was the reason?? But every cloud has a sliver lining, so something even better will happen for you Guys. |
Re: A moan. Don't ask me about moving to Canada today
It happened to my other half just before coming here, but it was a blessing in disguise for us, he's now in a better job on more pay.
Good luck for the perfect job that will come to your other half now, from all the work he's done, he deserves it. Terese |
Re: A moan. Don't ask me about moving to Canada today
Thanks for all the good wishes.
We've postponed our camping trip til next week so we can get OH's resume up to date and circulated, and we've got friends from the UK staying for a week...unexpectedly! They love Kelowna...and Canada generally is a big hit. Thanks again, support much appreciated. Sharon x |

It aint just Kelowna I'm afraid. Canadian employment law is definitely slanted in favour of the employer as far as dismissal "cos I say so" goes:(
Which some would argue is a good thing  |

The stuff that (mostly) died in the UK 10 years ago still occurs here. R. |

Had a bit of a shocker today. My OH joined a big US company in Kelowna, worked his socks off to gain Canadian qualifications, passed them all, then worked six days a week 7.30am to 8pm to meet his targets. It was frowned upon if he even took national holidays off...even Boxing Day. He was working such stupid hours there was no way I could take a job.
He's been with them just under twelve months, and we had a call this morning to say he's being 'let go' today. So, don't ask me about moving to Canada today....feeling like I want to get on the next plane out. Not back to the UK, but anywhere apart from here. Sure after the dust settles I'll be more reasonable about it, but right now....grrrr. This work culture is one of the reasons I demoted Canada and headed for Australia. It's hard to believe that some people in the UK get 6 weeks off ayear and there would never be even a hint of a suggestion that public holidays had to be worked. I hope Australia is the same, frankly. I sincerely hope his next company treats him with more respect. |

Yes, I agree with all the posters who say that this will prove to be a blessing in disguise. The same thing happened to me, only I had been in the job for 25 years. At the time I was really upset. They had been harrassing me for a year after the person I had worked for all that time left. When they finally quit harrassing me and told me there was "no work there for me", I said to a friend "why didn't I just quit when they were doing the harrassment?" HOWEVER, let me tell you, when I calmed down, I realized that not quitting was the best thing I did. They had to pay me a big severance after all that time because they were not firing me "for cause". I then realized that if I had quit I would have walked out of there with nothing! Well, I would have had my pension plan but no severance money.
Of course, after a year, severance wouldn't have been worth anything, but for any long time employees, my advice since then has been - if you think they want rid of you - hang in there until they let you go - you will be laughing all the way to the bank eventually. I am not sure in what ways employment law is "better" in England, but it seems to me that even if you can't be "fired" working in a place where the powers that be don't want you -- its extremely stressful and tough to put up with. I am glad my harrassment only lasted a year, I am not sure I could have stood it much longer. When I wasn't busy - they made sure I wasn't busy - and I offered to take some work from someone who had too much. As soon as I got started, somehow one of the partners came and took it away. Sorry, so and so has to do that! The worst one was when two of the partners called me into an office. They started telling me that one of the other partners had got into trouble with the tax department and if I ever got information from the tax department I was to give it to them - the two partners! I had no idea what they were talking about. I was corporate paralegal - why would I get information from the tax department about one of the partners -- you mean it got handed to me by mistake??? Then one of them said "If it comes to you as gossip and you pass it on - you will be summarily dismissed!!" Then I realized that what they were trying to do was tell me this, and then shortly afterwards they would come and say I had spread gossip about this other partner and the tax department - and fire me for cause with no severance." So, being understandably upset, I phoned a lawyer friend and he said "Pretty soon you should get out of there and sue them for constructive dismissal!" About 10 minutes later, one of the two partners came to my desk and said "Sorry, we made a mistake - there is no trouble with that partner with the tax department - forget about what we told you!" I am pretty sure they went to one of the other partners bragging about how they had thought up this scheme to get rid of me, and this partner had a brain, and he told them what idiots they were and to go and take it all back!! It sounds ridiculous now - but at the time, believe me I understand harrassment!!! Your husband is lucky. It sounds like his employer is treating him with respect. |

It sounds ridiculous now - but at the time, believe me I understand harassment!!! Your husband is lucky. It sounds like his employer is treating him with respect. Same thing is hap with my son he is being harassed out of his Architects job having to minute every job he does including giving advice to others on the team, If you work till 9 i think you get a meal from the canteen and if till 11 you can book a Taxi home, bearing in mind he has been mugged twice and beaten to a pulp last sept  all the team go off to the gym for an hour and then come back and carry on yet my son has been told he cant get his meal and taxi as he left the office ( to go Rugby training for an hour with the firms team  ) so now he stays till 6.30 and is still in at 8 so still doing an extra 21/2 hours a day so they want him out ? as he is only working part time  They have just won a huge contract in the East based on his design worth millions yet they are still harassing him out, I told him to go to HR and mention the words harassment and stress and see what happens Its one of the most respected architects firms in the world and this is going on, he said its so awful and he really doesn't deserve it, having worked for 2 years till midnight and sometimes all night, its because he has a baby due any minute ( she is 2 weeks late tomorrow ) and he told his boss he can't work long hours anymore, and thats in the UK so now he is looking for another job In your case Purley you did the right thing to stay but for him he would get nothing only more stress and he doesn't need that on what they are paying him and with a new baby, Lifes too short |

Hello one and all
Resurrecting this thread as my OH has a verbal job offer and he also had a third interview today for another job, so he may even have a choice! Thanks for all the support and good wishes. Hopefully this is a sign of a change in fortunes for us. Just me to get into gainful employment now. Good luck to everyone else who's looking for a job. Off now for a beer - or three. |
