You misunderstand. Newspapers require no pre existing relationship...they are exempt from the DNC list.

Organisations you have a preexisting relationship with are ALSO exempt. ALSO charitable organsations.

Does being on the List prevent all unsolicited calls?
Being on the National DNCL keeps you from receiving most telemarketing calls, but there are exceptions. Registered charities are still allowed to call for donations, and certain other organizations-such as companies conducting polls or surveys, political parties, and newspapers looking for subscriptions-can also continue to contact you. As well, if you’ve done business with a company in the last 18 months, that company is considered to have a relationship with you and is allowed to call.

Ah ha! Useless to me then. Telemarketers calling me usually represent the Star, the bank or the phone company. The only other one that calls more than once a week is a vehicle warranty scam.

I've had that annoying call about 'your final warning on your factory authorized warranty' or some such thing. Not sure which is more annoying, thaat or the 'this is your captain speaking'.

I spoke to them. I explained that I have a 1987 Land Cruiser with 135,000 miles on it. The salesman said that they usually try "to catch vehicles more quickly after they fall out of warranty" but he said he would speak to his manager to see what could be arranged. The manager came on the line and, after some blather, said that they'd make an exception and provide a warranty for $580/year. The $580 could be paid right then by credit card and I'd be immediately protected.

So it isn't only me who likes to string these grifters along as they think they have a sale.

Oh no, it's a great irritation to my partner that I'll keep the conversation going as long as I possibly can. On Sunday the TD VISA saleswoman was with me the whole afternoon. The only harm you can do to them is to waste their time.

ha, i'll make sure to drive down there myself, sounds an interesting street! All the info been very helpful, wasn't expecting the reporter thing to interupt the flow! Does that happen often? I haven't got time to breathe at the moment, with 3 liitle kids in tow , half term at school and trying to dethread my life here and start the thread in canada (Guelph now!), to talk to some reporter!!

I wouldn't say often but it does happen from time to time. The Star is a newspaper sold primarily to immigrants. It runs a lot of fluff stories about happy immigrants so I suppose finding someone on this board to gush about Canada gets the reporter a lot of column inches for not very much work.

Good luck in your search.

How would you know? According to earlier posts you read the British Observer. You have time to read that and the Toronto Star and post posts at the rate you do?

Not the Observer, no. I do read several papers in the real format or online, primarily the Gruaniad and the NYT. If I feel the need to check on local news, if, for example, I hear on the BBC that there's to be an election in Canada, then I glance at the Star. I also browse through it in the supermarket checkout line if the WWN lacks a grabbing headline. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that one "reads" the Star anymore than one "reads" the NOTW but I do look at it now and then.

Are you another Star employee? If so I congratulate you on your syntax, if not your fact checking.

I wouldn't say often either, I'd say every time.

I'm an immigrant so I do read the Star on line, mostly the sport sections and the TV listings. Occasionally they make an editorial comment of passing interest.

I think the paper is to be commended though for using its reporters to cold call gentlefolk throughout the GTA.

Beats outsourcing to Mumbai like the Globe or the Sun.

You don't think the Star has outsourced its reporting to Mumbai? It certainly reads as if it has.

Dundas I hate with a passion its an extention of the grizzly hammer!! Ancaster is nice but expensive and full of pre madonna portugeuse and Italians parading round their expesive houses all arrogant they live in Ancaster and such - not my cup of tea but if u dont mind that a nice place to live. Guelph is a nice town, like posts have said its a university town, close to 401 but enough removed, Milton I do quite like a couple of decent pubs in town and housing is a good price but I defo agree with comments made here its an urban nightmare at times and has grown way too quickly for the infrastructure in place.

Personally Id go for Bolton if you want removed a bit but good access to highways, its a nice size town with everything you need but isnt crazy busy and is 10/15 mins north of the 407.

I had exactly the same thing too word for word, let him waste his 10 mins giving his spiel before telling him to politely do something to himself, was all rather entertaining for a Thurs at work!

Not a love of Bolton though. Lots of ugly industry around there and it's very strip mall burbish except for 100 yards in each direction from the crossroads at the bottom of the hill.

Isn't there a quasi-decent pub on the east side of the road going down the hill before the crossroads...can't remember the name of it, but isn't as inbred as the Loretto Tavern.

Totally agree, and I live there..... Not where I would prefer to be but it is what works best for my chidren.

On the plus side, there are plently of little pockets that are nowhere near any of that. The area has plenty of money in it, due to the italian influence. It has all the shops you need (whether this is a plus or not is debateable).

Schools are good, the sub divisions have a happy family feel to them. There is plenty to do in the local area, lots for the children, good library. Everything is within easy reach skiing to the North, the airport to pick up visitors. OH works in Brampton it's a 30 minute commute for him.

Bolton is one of those places that does exactly what it says on the tin.

The one in Loretto is the Loretto Inn. I've never been in but my OH says "It's wonderful. I love it. They have the best wings in five counties, Marlene makes them. And you can rent a room above the bar".

So there.

I've only been once...I lived in Brampton and needed to meet up with a friend of mine who was working at Honda and we were supposed to go to a party in Barrie that night...we had such a good time people watching at the Loretto Tavern that we got to the party in Barrie pretty late.

It seems to draw people from all over the surrounding area. I notice on their website on the menu they have battered pickles...your kind of place dbd

Inn, not Tavern, Inn.

In light of there being pickles I shall make every effort to check it out. However, I am nowhere near as blended into local society as the OH, and shall do so with some trepidation.

I only went once and to me it was more of a tavern than an inn....I wasn't aware that rooms could be rented....

It looks like you could be on a foodie road trip if they have battered pickles...doesn't Mikey B live up that way......

Ahh, the one on the corner of the intersection, middle of nowhere??

We spent last halloween at that particular venue, children's party.... Quite entertaining if your eight years old. Luckily I am quite happy to people watch, it almost put me off moving to Canada.....

I think he may have moved on after a domestic upheaval. The OH goes to the Loretto Inn with reenactors, people who do rustic things in period costume. They have lots of facial hair, especially the men, and when not in period costume wear lots of garments from the house of Harley-Davidson. I can see that, at first glance, they would not create a welcoming impression.

I'm comfortable with that so long as I have the woman with me, unhyphenated Canadians usually take her to be one of their own and tend not to be hostile to either of us.

This might interest you, clynnong, it's not a description of Mississauga but of somewhere else like everywhere else. Sometimes I despair of North America.

'On Sunday we took a drive out to "the Valley". Two roads lead out of Anchorage. ... The Glen Highway leads North to the Evangelical ex-urbs which were, until last summer, Alaska's dirty secret. You've probably heard of Wasilla and, if you ever visit it, you might be struck with an uncanny sense of deja vu. It might make you nostalgic for Buffalo or the road leading out of East Lansing. People say it's a nothing but an agglomeration of strip malls but Wasilla lacks even the sense of cohesion that malls would provide. It is, literally, a stretch of highway along which every big box retailer and restauranteur in America has opened a franchise. Mid-way through the strip, just behind the "chili's", there is a lake. Sarah Palin lives somewhere on that lake and so do all the other Mat-Su high rollers. Everyone else lives in subdivisions overlooking the parking lots of Best Buy et al.'

The imagery that I'm coming up with isn't too pleasant...what is the source of the quote.

North Americans don't build cities very well...especially the edges of them where the Chevy Avalanche rules supreme.

If you want a depressing southern Ontario equivalent drive along Hwy 24 in Cambridge south of the 401 or Victoria Street in Kitchener east of Hwy 86, Hwy 7 in Bramalea, anywhere in Concord, Ont, Bayfield Street north of the 400 in Barrie...the list goes on.

I think you are underselling yourself when you say you 'sometimes' despair of NA.....The unfortunate thing is that the UK contains the Slough's, MK's, Hatfields etc, that aren't exactly bucolic urbanity.

Ah, so you OH is a member of SCA...is that what they call it these days...Society for Creative Acronism...in other words, people who either don't realize or don't want to acknowledge that we are now in the 21st century.

Yes. She's not actually Canadian but they don't notice as she speaks their language. She's not a reenactor, at least not yet, just knows a bunch from work.

I very much like Guelph but "shopping"? There's the gay bedding store, lots of bookshops, second hand guitar stores - college town stuff, Fifth Avenue it aint.
