Default Medical training in Canada

HI

I am a B grade nurse in Uk ( not registered for those who might not know )

When we come to canada ( Calgary ) i am thinking i would like to do my full nurse training or train in another medical profession..... not sure what yet.

Has anybody else looked into this - does Calgary health authority offer such full training? Any info would help please.

I have looked at some nursing sites - but have been unable to find the info i am looking for - maybe i am looking in wrong place.

Thanks

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Depends where you are thinking of moving to, I'd start with the local university and look at the school of nursing there. That should tell you what qualifications you need.

Here is the link to Calgary, http://www.ucalgary.ca/NU/

I think the OT and PT schools are up in Edmonton. Both are Masters level entry. What sort of training were you thinking of?

For RN training the following might help:

Educational Requirements
In Alberta, registered nurse status requires a diploma or bachelor's degree in nursing. As of January 1, 2010 a bachelor's degree in nursing will be required. Diploma programs are currently being phased out.

The following post-secondary institutions offer collaborative degree programs in nursing:

Athabasca University
Grande Prairie Regional College
Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton
Keyano College in Fort McMurray
Lethbridge College
Medicine Hat College
Mount Royal College in Calgary
Red Deer College
University of Alberta in Edmonton
University of Calgary
University of Lethbridge.
Admission requirements vary but generally include a competitive average in:

English Language Arts 30-1 (English 30)
Biology 30
Chemistry 30 (some institutions will accept Science 30)
Math 30 or Pure Math 30 (some institutions will accept Math 31, Physics 30, or at least 60 per cent in Math 33 or Applied Math 30)
a fifth 30-level course (Social Studies 30 or a 30-level language recommended).
Immunizations, health assessments, CPR and Standard First Aid training and/or security checks also may be required.

I am a RNLD (Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities) and am aware that system is completely different in Canada, I am in kind of the same situation and will have to retrain if I decide to continue in nursing. Problem is not sure what else to do But that's for me to think about though

Jenna, first step is RN, make sure there is no problem, then you can specialise.

Huge need for Nurses, don't worry about Part Time, you can work 7 days a week if you want.
