Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
PSS International Removals have advised us that we shouldn't put food items in the container. Doesn't everyone pack these sorts of things??
Does anyone have experience of customs problems with fave foods packed in their container? I don't think I want to emigrate any more if I can't take Marmite...:( |

What you can do is tell them you have some personal things you want to pack your self, they will mark the box accordingly - personal packed by owner. I had a very large jar of marmite in my suit case on Sunday, when I arrived back from the UK ;) |

You can buy Marmite and PG Tips here. You may have to pay more but why bother? Why risk getting your container opened and searched?? If you really need to bring them put them in your luggage.

Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
Marmite is available, even in Alberta:rofl: and Tetley is also available everywhere around here, PG Tips is expensive in comparison though. Yes you pay more for the marmite and you can only get small jars, but it becomes a treat rather than the norm.

Well...I packed two cases of Bachelors processed peas into my container and had no problem....I even mentioned them on the 'goods to follow' list for Canadian Customs.
Alas they are long gone....:(...one of the few food items I really miss from the UK. |

Marmite is allowed, its just that some customs people think there is meat in it and so make a fuss.

I LOVE this site! It's just FAB that you can ask a question and a dozen people will come to your rescue. Thanks to all. Keep your thoughts coming.
I've met people here who packed their own container and she bought EVERYTHING in her kitchen cupboards, just as if she was moving within the UK You can get stuff here, but you'll pay a fortune for it. If you have any gaps in any boxes, fill 'em with Marmite i say ;) |
Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
not transported Marmite but for several years heinz tinned sponges were a required entry to my sister's house.
went in the case & never had a problem. they have found a 'little britain' store since. |

Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
Well we used PSS and they told us the same so we didnt put any food in our container at all. Knowing our luck ours would of been the one searched and we really wanted our stuff ASAP!
We do know people who have put food in their container and its been fine so i would say its the "luck of the Draw"! But you can buy Marmite here and also PG Tips so maybe you might wanna leave it out of the container! Good luck with what you choose to do! Where abouts are you heading??? Thanks Lisa dd |

It's not a fine. It's more that when the customs persons see that food is listed they may decide to open the whole container to check it. This is at your expense and incovenience.

Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
We brought Yorkshire Tea and Heniz Baked Beans in our container and included them in our goods to follow list. The Immigration Officer was beside himself in case the beans included pork until I was able to show him the receipt from Morrisons which I'd handily kept with the paperwork for some reason! We also had to take the beans back to show him the next day ... ...no, really. Hilarious. (If we hadn't offered to do this he could have ordered everything to be unpacked and checked at our expense.)
You ARE allowed to bring these items in (no meat) so just be honest. Believe me, we had such a jobsworth IO and if it wasn't allowed he would have taken great delight in telling us so and personally slapping our wrists! Lovely beans ....96 tins...... yep you can buy them here but they cost $10 for 4 in our local Scottish butchers/deli. Good luck! |

I see you landed on October 20th. I hope you haven't got through the 96 cans just yet, because I have an interest in air quality.
They've become a delicacy, a treat to be savoured and not to be eaten lightly.. If we REALLY like someone we might even serve them a few spoonfuls when they come to dinner. And TWO tins were wrapped up for a Brit friend for his birthday. Generous or what? |
Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
We shipped loads of Robinsons' squash in our container. We hid it inside a pine blanket box!
Our container was opened and searched, but it was all ok. They aren't looking for your small amount of food or squash that clearly is for your own use. We were told they are more concerned about arms, drugs and larger amounts of illegal imports. In our case my son's golf clubs must have looked like guns!! But it was all ok. Although as other posters have said, we can buy tea, marmite, squash and English baked beans here now. I paid $1.99 for a tin of beans at Fairway Market yesterday and thought that wasn't to much of a rip off. |

They have weird assortments though like Imperial leather soap, not sure that I would crave that!! Happy Shopping! |

I find the UK beans rather weak and insipid after exposure to the more robust Canadian variety. One's palate becomes corrupt or acclimatised depending on your view.

Re: Marmite and PG Tips in the container?
Hi
On a visit a couple of years ago for Christmas, I took 6 large Christmas puddings to give as gifts........put them in my hand luggage....it went through x-ray and showed up like bombs. So everything out of the holdall and explanations about Christmas puds......they were okay when I explained what they were....we still laugh about it today. Stef
