Default making up for missing special events back home...

Hubbie and I have been in B.C. for a month now and birthdays, Christmas, weddings and births which we'll have no chance of attending are starting to loom.
I was wondering if any of you have come up with creative gifts or messages to send back for those special occasions you can't be there in person for? This isn't about a substitute for being there - just something to show you are thinking of them.

I can't help you at all here. I must be as hard as nails as I am glad not to be at forced frivolity and shared "happiness".

I miss the company of some people but not events with those people. I find the best way of showing someone you are thinking of them is to write and tell them so, and not to wait for these special occasions.

I'm with you on that one darlin'. I phone people rather than write but that's not really an option for you.

Don't get me started on the "shared happiness".

The writing rather than phoning option has been a good thing in a way. My family doesnt do overt displays of emotion and expressing feelings, my brother says very little about anything really. Since we have moved away though, I have had some beautiful letters saying things that would never have been spoken. The written word is more tangible, more lasting.

Deaf Blind is a terrifying thought, and I am very shortsighted with borderline glaucoma so I see an eye specialist every 6 months.

I do have a very good sense of smell though!!

I should have been polite and not mentioned the war, nor hijacked the thread, so lets get back to missing those moments.

Hi Molby

I tend to send personalized cards using Moonpig which is a UK based site - their selection is fantastic and they can be sent next day delivery for about 3 - 5 pounds inc P&P - the cards look shop bought but have personalized messages even photos if you like http://www.moonpig.com/

I also shop at UK online sites for presents and then have them shipped direct - places like http://www.crocus.co.uk/ - saves time and effort and is cheaper than sending from Canada - there are beautiful rose bushes etc for almost any special event and reasonably priced.

I also use moon pig and found them great, its even cheaper than buying and posting a card from canada. When we left the UK I bought my sisters and son web cams and gave them instructions on how to join SKYPE. Thats a great way of communicating.
