We pay 1c/min for Google Voice, which works from our cell phones etc as well as our landline, and for my in-laws, they generally prefer a physical phone call. We also use Skype for video chats every 2-3 weeks.

not bad, yet the small print baffles me.

I suppose if there are $2.50 cards one would need to use the full amount when calling the UK?

Alex on the basis its a $5 card, what would you estimate is the amount of time a person could call the UK multiple times with all of those services charges thrown in?

(1)" Calls originating and terminating in Northern British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, are subject to a surcharge of 14¢/minute and 11¢/minute respectively. Additional rate of 10¢/minute applies to calls originating from the United States.

(2) 50¢ payphone charge may apply. Minimum 29¢/call. When the face value of the card is not used in full, a 15% billing fee is applicable at the end of each call. Calls to certain overseas destinations have higher rates for calls to cellular phones and premium service lines. No credits provided on calls made to overseas cellular phones.

Rates are subject to change without notice. Calls are billed in blocks of 2 minutes. Card is non-refundable and has no cash value; valid 3 months from first use or recharge, subject to applicable law."

i use a CiCi phone card

No activation fee
no maitenance fee

a $5 card gets me 300 minutes (~ 1.6 cents/min)

Valid for 6 months after initial activation

I get 60 free worldwide mins a month with Skype from my Office 365 subscription so worst case I can use that. (that subscription is $99/yr) Otherwise, FaceTime and if we can't video chat, FaceTime audio (a phone call from apple-apple devices that works over wi-fi/data) ... FaceTime/audio is obviously free so it doesnt get any cheaper ;)

have to call family tomorrow, more than one too so that'll be 2 or 3 hours on my cell for no extra cost.

Just get the person at the other end to use Skype or similar. Costs nothing, doesn't get cheaper than that.

UK being 7 Hours behind, the work phone works a treat and is absolutely free

Not all have smart phones etc. My sister till recently still had a Nokia that was just a cell. Some people don't even have cell phones they only have landline. So Skype etc isn't for everyone. I enjoy the convenience of just using my phone to make a phone call to anyone I know in the UK regardless of whether they have cell phones or just landlines.
