Re: Living in Prince Edward Island
OK, so what's the catch with PEI?
Our intention for the past 6 months has been to settle in BC, Kamloops to be exact, we even spent a week there in Feb checking the place out and it seems to be ideal.
Recently my Wife has been looking over my shoulder whilst I use the PC at night and discovered www.mls.ca! she did a quick search over the weekend on houses in PEI and to be honest we were both shocked at what value for money you get when it comes to houses.
It seems we could get a much bigger house with lots land for about $100k less than we can in Kamloops.
Maybe it's just me, but when you see cheap beautiful houses you immediately think that there is either no work in the area or the house is miles away from anywhere.
Can anyone who lives on (or near) Charlottetown please tell me what life is like? I know this is a very ambiguous question, but in general what are the Schools like, crime rate, weather, employment (I work in IT but fancy a change) and most importantly do you feel isolated living on the island?
I know there is a bridge connecting you to NB but I can't help but think when my Son turns into a moany teenager he will feel claustrophobic.
I tried the search button and have read as much as I can but would appreciate any first hand experience.
Thanks

Re: Living in Prince Edward Island
I came across this ditty on the "official" PEI website. It's a bit lengthy and wordy, but worth a look. Had I been going to PEI and read this before hand, I would have had some serious second thoughts!!
However, it's nice to know that rossandvi are able to give a different perspective to the one presented!!
Please visit -http://www.gov.pe.ca - click on the immigration link and have a look a the left hand menu where there is a link entitled 'A report on a study of recent immigrants to PEI'
Enjoy!!

Re: Living in Prince Edward Island
I was born in St. Budeaux, Wolseley Rd.
Lived in Ernesettle, near the old Naval place. I was a friend of and went to school with, Trevor Francis when I was 6 to 9. My only claim to fame.

Let me make you my first post to this forum.
We, i.e wife and 2 children went to PEI in January for an immigration interview as Provincial nominees.
It was cold. It was not particularly lively (although it was January). The shops seemed pretty adequate for general needs although there probably werent the specialist shops you might get in say Ontario or even Halifax. The roads were more than adequate for the island, probably even allowing for the summer influx of tourists I guess there should not be to much of a problem.
There was a generally nice feel to the place and people were friendly. Restaurants were nice, however I would guess that if you like lots of nightlife and clubs and things you may be disappointed.
Houses are probably amongst the best value in Canada, probably as a result of the limited job opportunities, and this in itself can compensate for a slightly lower income. We would be buying 2 houses from the sale of our U.K house and renting one out probably for holiday lets.
At one time it was our plan to move back to my birthplace in Devon, however, the house prices are absolutely ridiculous there now for anything decent. PEI should offer a similar type of lifestyle we were looking for albeit with some major differences in winter temperatures. The summer is apparently very pleasant. Warmth without the humidity and I dont know how you feel, but for me the humidity spoils the majority of our summer.
I still feel that the U.K has a lot more to offer in terms of prices and choice in the shopping experience, but with internet shopping, this aspect is not quite so important as it was, I am getting that I cant bear to look at a newspaper anymore without feeling pretty mad about the way the country is being governed and I now intend to move to a Democracy even if its not perfect.
My children are not particularly interested in the bright lights and big city life however if they want to move in the future they will do so just as they would in the UK. Of course they would have to move a hell of a lot further to get to the next town in Canada but in the UK you can easily be stuck for example on the gridlocked M25, 2 miles from your destination. The distance may as well be 100 miles away.
I hope you and me both make the right choice and also like you I would like to hear more from anyone with experience of this province.

Re: Living in Prince Edward Island
We had a chat to the people on the PEI stand at Emigrate Show and this pretty much sums up what they seemed to be trying not to tell us, but it did look lovely. Think there are quite a few jobs driving trucks. I picked up a couple of brochures which I would be pleased to send to you if you PM me your address.

Re: Living in Prince Edward Island
Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your reply, I will be making a trip to PEI (on my own) before finally heading to Kamloops this summer just to make sure that we are not missing out on a golden opportunity but I think the chances are we will still be heading to BC.
At least in Kamloops Vancouver is 3hr drive west and Calgary 5hrs East, I dread to think what the equivalents are in PEI.
Let me know what you decide
Cheers

Thanks for your kind offer but we are 90% sure that we are heading to BC and not PEI anymore.
You never know though, I could get offered a job of the 'Island Computer repair man' and live happily ever after
