Hi, I really like living here. It's not the prettiest place in the world, don't judge the city on a drive through (there are some nice parks & areas) but if you want everything on your doorstep without the smog & pollution then move to Brantford.

It's a really different culture here in Canada, you can't really pub crawl as things are so far apart - so you tend to settle in one place for the evening. There are loads of resturants from fast food to fine dining - lots of things to do from Kayaking on the Grand River to go-karts, loads of Golf, Curling Skating of course (Wayne Gretsky is from Brantford). YOu name it then it's here. Paris is quaint & St George is nice too. We stay in West Brant as it is so family friendly. As we are only 20mins from Hamilton you also get all the big names coming for concerts & events so you don't really need to go to Toronto (1hr) unless you need to. We both found jobs straight away & move into our new build in 25days - so life is good for us.

I hope this helps & if you have any other questions please let me know.

Hey there! Thanks for your feedback, very helpful!

Just a question on houses.. We have been looking at houses by Empire Communities. You mentioned that you are moving into a new build, just wondered if that was the same builder you have brought from?

any information on this builder or the area, I think the development is called Wyndfield?

Or any info on the builder you are buying from would also be great.

Thanks!! :D

we know brantford......it is UGLY........canada and even ontario are huge places, there are many, many better places to settle in which are far more attractive in everyway than brantford....we also know basingstoke well and lived there when we were very young.....check out other towns in ontario before you take the plunge in brantford....it has to be last resort......

We travelled around all of the other provinces (except BC) & have been to every corner in Ontario and Brantford was NOT our last resort! (How rude) We found that Brantford had everything we needed & does have pretty areas. The people are friendly & our life is good & we lived in a beautiful place in Britain.

We live in the same area as you are talking about & over look Green space. We have no neighbours at the back of us & see wonderful wildlife. There are trees & countryside for our kids to play in & we can snowmobile at the back of our new house in the field. We didn't use Empire - we went with Smithview homes as they are a smaller builder & will build to your spec (the larger builders won't). We are more than happy but, I would advise you to travel around because what is good for one may not suit another. Some people are hung up on looks & first impressions. We like living here & our kids love it. We originally had decided to settle in Stratford which is wonderfully beautiful, but once you scratch the surface, there was more that appealed to us in other places.

The best advise is take what everyone says, visit the places yourself, then draw your own conclusions.

Good luck

Thank you!!

Don't suppose you have a web address for Smithview? I looked on what I thought was their website and they are only building in ancaster so I don't think it was the right one?

That would be the same company. They have only built three houses in Brantford & they are the same craftsmanship & standard as the ones in Ancaster (only slightly smaller!). This is the first time they have built here & are trying to establish themselves. Their Real estate guy is found on this site:

http://www.castellano.ca/

He may have some of the listings in Brantford. Most are various types of lots ready for building.

Hope this helps. Reagrds Gail.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Blimey, that's harsh, I go to Brantford now and then without being horrified. Northern Mississauga, much of Hamilton, Woodbridge, Vaughan, there are countless places that make one shudder and drive faster but Brantford's not one of them.

Basedn on dbd's commentary on various urban and less than urban areas of southern Ontario, I would take this as a ringing endorsement on Brantford. Sort of like when Simon Cowell says 'that was slightly less than atrocious'.

My SIL and BIL etc, live in Brantford and I've been many times (too many actually) and many people there quote how close it is to other towns...which to me is not a ringing endorsement.

The downtown is quite dreary in places and most of the commercial activity is on a ugly strip called King George Road.

I've yet to find a decent pub in town (there is one in St. George about 10 km to the north) or an Indian restaurant.

In terms of a place to raise a family, it probably ticks the boxes.

Well, face it, if you're living in Ontario you really haven't done well in life. Good bits of Ontario vs. bad bits of Ontario are academic really; none of it is thrilling or really threatening, it's all something for which one could reasonably settle and none of it is something about which one could reasonably be excited. Essex but colder, I suppose.

Brantford may not have pubs or Indian food but neither do most towns in Ontario. It probably has a curling rink and, if so, it's as exciting as Ottawa or Oshawa or Wawa.

LOL... many years ago I a friend of mine in Toronto had a job opportunity come up in Ottawa. Everyone was telling him that Ottawa was great, because it's close to Montreal...
