Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
We have in our attic two Canadian canvas life jackets dating from World War II. I have been on the internet for over an hour now trying to find other Canadian canvas life jackets from World War II and have come up with NOWT!
Can anyone help? Am I calling them the wrong thing? |
Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
You could try this, it might help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_flotation_device
Is there any identification labels or stencilling on them? Good luck Shaun |
Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
It says
Made in Canada - John Leckie Limited Toronto on the back; and Department of Transport Standard Life Jacket on the front. |
Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes) married a Jean Leckie in 1907. He is also referred to as the inventor of the life-preserver.

Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
Try Life Vest+WW2 & also Mae West+Life Preserver
PFD is a more recent term and not used in WW2 |

Thanks you lot! I knew I could rely on you! It's still driving me crazy though because nothing I find looks like what we have!! I will have to take a snap of it tomorrow to show you!

Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
John Leckie used to have a store in Halifax but I can
t find it now so it has probably gone by the wayside.....Sounds like an interesting find. Why don't you call the Maritime Museum Of the Atlantic maybe they can give you some info about them. They probably wouldn't be worth much mostly historical value I would think. What a great find though. |
Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
Hi
Try phoning or e-mailing the Maritime museum in Halifax. They may be able to help. |
Re: Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
Yeah I think I will give them a call. I have taken a few pictures of it now, so that I can e-mail it over to them. It doesn't seem to matter what I type in, I just cannot find the exact same thing as the two I have here!

LOL - well yes they are...but I want to know how old they are and where they might be from. I did look but sadly cannot see the words "Titanic" anywhere on them...:)
