Life Jackets/Life Preservers....
We have in our attic two Canadian canvas life jackets dating from World War II. I have been on the internet for over an hour now trying to find other Canadian canvas life jackets from World War II and have come up with NOWT!
Can anyone help? Am I calling them the wrong thing?

You could try this, it might help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_flotation_device
Is there any identification labels or stencilling on them?
Good luck

It says
Made in Canada - John Leckie Limited Toronto on the back; and
Department of Transport Standard Life Jacket on the front.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes) married a Jean Leckie in 1907. He is also referred to as the inventor of the life-preserver.

Try Life Vest+WW2 & also Mae West+Life Preserver
PFD is a more recent term and not used in WW2

the company is still in business with it's HQ in Don Mills. I'm not sure what you need to know, but they might help.

John Leckie used to have a store in Halifax but I can
t find it now so it has probably gone by the wayside.....Sounds like an interesting find. Why don't you call the Maritime Museum Of the Atlantic maybe they can give you some info about them. They probably wouldn't be worth much mostly historical value I would think. What a great find though.

Yeah I think I will give them a call. I have taken a few pictures of it now, so that I can e-mail it over to them. It doesn't seem to matter what I type in, I just cannot find the exact same thing as the two I have here!
