Seems a bit daft to me. That country's not going to be much use to you when you're dead. If people thought these things through a bit more, we'd all be a lot better off.

Why the confusion? it is expected that they remember the lives lost just as it is expected that they attend remembrance day parades (i'm talking the Baden Powell contingent here ). Expected is not the same as forced. If however, you were off the opinion that your child should not pay those respects then they would hardly be kicked out of the organisations nor school.

Do allow me to point out that even mapquest doesn't know where St. Albert is. Consistent opinion on offer at somewhere near the Yard, though likely not in it.

Map quest does not know where many places are let alone how to get there

Hence my comment .....

One would think, after 90 years (and more), that someone would have seen the repetitions of the overall pattern and understood what it all meant.

And I'm sure that those who did lay down their lives in the early wars did so in the hope that their children and those that came after them would have better lives. And for that they should be honored.

I had my annual appraisal/arse-kicking. It was bad timing. Given the shit I caused in Washington the week before, my boss told me: "I fear lest you open your gob again in front of journalists".

On the other hand, my stroppy tongue may well see me heading off to California quite soon. To Santa Clara.

Lest we forget . . .

Someone told me right at the start of this thread to have some "respect". For whom and for what reason, I dunno.

Perhaps for yourself, so you don't make a complete arse of yourself, but perhaps that may not be possible as short term memory seems to be a challenge.

Are you familiar with the concept of peer pressure?

I was "expected" to attend remembrance day things as a kid. Didnt really have the faintest idea what it was really all about back then, it was just a lot of standing around in the chilly november wind.

Now that I understand it more I am more than happy to stand around in whatever weather Canada throws at me for a couple of hours and play my horn as required.

Dont get me wrong, I think its important to involve the whole community, but education is the key element that seems to have been missing in my cub/scout experience (or maybe I was too busy playing footy to pay much attention:o)

Funnily enough I am familiar with the meaning of peer pressure:rolleyes:. Perhaps education was not in your scout group/ school but it was always in mine, brownies, school and parents also played their roll in explaining "why we should do things".

You were too busy playing my boy!;)

More fool them. I'd have more respect for someone that managed to stay alive. Getting yourself killed is neither big nor clever.

I think there is a valid position in arguing that modern day professional soldiers are aware of the risks that they face and yet they sign up to do a job, therefore its just a workplace hazard. Arguing that all soldiers are just there cos they like to shoot others is going beyond that, pushing the boundaries of good taste and reason for sure, but is probably not breaking any rules here. Is it trolling, posting to provoke an outraged response? Its close, that's for sure.

Calling someone a tit cos you dont like their position on a subject however is bordering on abusive posting, which is against the rules;)
