Las Vegas shooting

"At least 50 dead..."

Could this be the one that finally causes Americans to see sense?

+1 Not a single tweet out of Trump this morning, and though he's deleted his earlier tweets backing Luther Strange in Alabama using the gun rights bandwagon, everybody knows he said it.

Net result of this tradgedy will be lots of jaw, jaw and little else. US is too far gone relative to thier gun culture and the nation will continue to suffer the consequences I fear. The term " reaping what you have sown" springs to mind.

A tweet in my timeline this morning summed it up:

"After Sandy Hook, sadly this is just another statistic. If killing babies didn't change anything, nothing will. Your prayers do nothing."

So no, it'll change nothing. And there will be hand-wringing over not wishing to jump to conclusions, or politicize a tragedy because the alleged shooter is white. If the shooter was a muslim or a person of colour there would be a very different and immediate reaction. Certainly from Trump.

I'm sure it won't be long until the sick conspiracy theories from various groups start hitting the web.

Stay strong Vegas.

If Trump aggressively aligns with the NRA nutters on this one, I think there might be just enough anti-Trump groundswell to bring gun control onto the agenda.

400 injured and still counting + 50 dead for now, the shooter shot himself with one of his 10 weapons

I can't have been the only person who felt a frisson of relief on hearing the shooter's name, that it was not an obviously "ethnic" individual.

Not that that makes a jot of difference to the dead and injured, but if this had been a brown person shooting, the anti-immigrant rhetoric would have been deafening. Instead, what we have is a whole lot of silence, which is troubling but entirely unsurprising. Oh, and "warm condolences," whatever they may be. Not an adjective I think I've ever heard attached to a condolence.

Yes, that took me by surprise too. Warm generally is more about fuzziness and it just doesn't sit right.

.

I felt a frisson of relief too, because Trump would have mishandled the situation.

They say Canada has as many guns as the US (per capita, presumably!) but that's hard to believe.

True or not, the important distinction is that Canadians don't use them to shoot each other, as a rule.

I watched some video on YouTube, this guy appears to fire off a full magazine then stops to reload, then continued to shoot, a full mag lasted only a few seconds, I believe this went on for almost an hour before police finaly located him.

What the people must have been going through in the stadium must of been sheer hell !!
