Kippers

Does anyone know where I can purchase smoked kippers in the greater Vancouver area? I fancy some for my breakfast over the Christmas holidays. I like the proper ones, not the ones in a can. I can get shed loads of smoked salmon but while its nice, its not the same as a couple of nicely warmed kippers, a fried egg and lashings of hot buttered toast.

Can you not get them in the frozen fish section - I've bought some in Red Deer and Red Deer is pretty sparse on 'exotic' foods.

So no one has come across kippers around here then? It looks like I might have to do my own research. I must say you lot are a bunch of lazy buggers.

Sobeys and Dominion here both have them but thats probably about as much use as a chocolate fireguard to you :)

And the Fish Depot on Duckworth St. Similarly no use to you but your thread did inspire me to buy a couple for the holidays. Thanks!

Re: Kippers

I have never seen kippers for sale over here, but have seen smoked mackerel in Superstore if that would be an acceptable substitute (I actually prefer smoked mackerel to kippers tbh!)

Re: Kippers

Thanks, smoked mackerel will be an acceptable alternative, I'll check it out. I think I'll also go and ask one of the fishmongers on Granville Island if they can get them in for me. I did do some research and saw that they are readily available on the east coast of Canada. On a side note I just took all my salmon that I caught this summer that had slight freezer burn, to get hot smoked. Should be done by just after Christmas.

Re: Kippers

Special thanks to 4Bells for the info. I got some lovely frozen Scottish kippers at Granville Island yesterday. They had smoked mackerel as well but the kippers look especially good.

Re: Kippers

How did the hot smoked salmon turn out ??

Did you ever try the hot smoking process yourself ? I used to do it a lot back home - particularly enjoyed smaller run seatrout (finnock) on the hot smoker
