If you've got a job to go to, you could do a lot worse than Kingston. It's a nice place but the locals are reputed to be unusually clannish in terms of hiring. That won't apply to the KGH of course.

Queens University, the Royal Military College, several penitentiaries (prisons) and the Hospital are the main employers, along with summer time tourism.

On edit: Queens University denies any connection with the good luck fairies.

I happen to like the place.

Good luck!

Hi,

As soon as I saw Kingston, just had to reply. I can't comment on living there because we're still in the UK but visited last summer on our Ontario recce. We absolutely love Kingston! It's a beautiful city, beautiful architecture, friendly people. We spoke to many Canadians whilst in Ontario who spoke very highly of the place. We're checking out Nova Scotia in March as we've heard so many good things about it but if we feel it's not quite right for us we'll definately move to Kingston. A smaller town we're interested in not too far from Kingston is called Gananoque. Really pretty.

Wishing you the best of luck and really envious,

Sarah

We are headed for Westport eventually, which is around 30 minutes drive form Kingston. We have visited Kingston quite a lot over the past three years and it is a great town. Loblaws the supermarket chain is good, quite a variety of food stuffs including crumpets, curry, proper cheese etc. There is a nice marina/waterfront and some good shopping in the town centre and shopping mall. Kingston is a big university town and has a large student population. House prices are reasonable too.
I like the place too!
Good luck for the interview...

Westport is a lovely town and is on a beatiful drive from K-town to Ottawa. Its very busy in the summer but a bit of a ghost town in the winter. Nice pub overlooking the lake on the south edge of the main street.

Re: Kingston anyone?

We moved to Kingston in the Spring last year, and I have to say it's a really great place to live.

Lots to do, feels very safe at all times of day & night, property prices aren't bad at all, and all the facilities you need on a day to day basis. Downtown is very pleasant, lots of old buildings(for Canada..), loads of outdoorsy stuff to do all year round, ample pubs and restaurants etc etc.

Kingston General is known as a very good employer, and pays pretty well for medical jobs from what I understand. They have recently announced another recruitment drive and are looking to recruit quite a number of people over the coming months.

Hope this helps, Andy.

Congratulations, fantastic news.
Once you have settled in Kingston make sure you take a drive up to Westport one sunny warm day. I can recommend the public beach at Sand Lake for a swim!

P.S. You must also try the hand-made ice cream in the little coffee shop next to the LCBO:thumbsup:

Congrats on the Job offer:thumbsup:we visited Kingston and it is still under consideration along with Barrie and Ottawa as a final destination if we get there.

My wife really liked it, it has a good size shopping mall, property prices were reasonable, and and the kids really liked the cheesy pasta in the wee Irish pub down near the water:rofl:

Good luck

Danny

Congratulations on OH's job offer

We'll be a year or so behind you - OH has to finish his degree first and we're midway through adopting our daughter, so lots to do before we're ready to go.

I'm likely to be working in Kingston Pen, and we'll be buying within the Kingston area. We've been loads of times - it's a lovely place. We've friends in Cape Vincent, NY, which is a short ferry ride across in the summer, or a pretty drive across in the winter. It's pretty central too, so isn't a nightmare to get to either Ottawa or Toronto or Watertown.

Very best of luck and hopefully see you around K'town!!:D
