Graduates of the residential schools could be hand picked to work on communal farms as part of an experiment. "REGINA -- The Peepeekisis Cree Nation is home to a unique and rarely acknowledged part of Canada’s residential school history: The File Hills Colony"

Ground radar search of the site in NS of the Shubenacadie Residential School, done over at least 4 occasions over the last 2 years, have shown no unmarked graves of possible children. The school only opened in 1930 and closed in 1956. Because of this the researchesr also used gound radar on surrounding areas of farm land.

They did find some unmarked graves, but all were determined to predate 1930 by around 100 years, hence are thought to be graves of original settlers!

I am glad about this.

I was talking to my daughter yesterday, and she said that when she arrived in NS in 1999, everyone said they'd never had any residential schools in the Maritimes.

Coming from Vancouver and BC, she knew about the existence of the schools because we drove past a couple every time we drove north to visit OH's sister, both of them were still in use in the 70s and at least part of the 80s, and were obvious "institutions" of some sort, from the appearance of the buildings to the fences round them. Of course, she asked about them, and we told her what they were. That was even though we didn't know the worst of it.

Then she did 2 Anthropology degrees in the 90s, when there was already talk of how the First Nations had been treated, and the rise of public consciousness about derogatory terms like Red Indian and Indian, and the start of respected terms of their suggestion. She was taught a lot about the horrors of schools and discrimination, plus the effects of colonialism.

People in NS knew nothing of that, That was even though the Shubenacadie school was very close to Halifax. Then things started emerging, and now of course, they know.

It was the only residential school in the Maritimes, and took children from all 4, plus a northern region or Quebec, not sure about Nfld and Labrador.

I actually had a similar experience in the US back in the early 2000s. We were staying in Arizona with friends, and one day the wife took me to an Indian (that is what it was called) School Museum that had recently opened near where they lived.

Typical type building, classrooms set up as if in use, photos of happy children ............ just like you see when you go to a pioneers' one room school on the Prairies. I couldn't help but say that we were finding out how bad such schools had been, and that was news to her.

Now, since the findings at Kamloops hi the headlines in major media in the US (and all over the world), people are learning what their First Nations have been saying for many years. Same as up here.

In fact, it seems that a minister of the government was sent down to the US to look at their system of Residential Schools before the Feds brought in the laws governing them here, back in the 1880s. The Canadian Residential Schools were based on that visit, and the buildings reflect the US ones.

Permanent markers are going up in the Regina residential school cemetery.
"Pasqua First Nation and Pro Metal Industries donated the 38 grave markers to create a permanent memory of the children who didn’t come home."

So the pope has been and made his apologies.

I haven't seen anything on TV just heard reports on the radio and I was bit puzzled. I must have heard recordings of him speaking in at least three places and I was struck by the monotone sound of his voice. I couldn't even hear enough to work out what language he spoke in, it was just in the background while a translated version, from male and female voices, seemed to have the appropriate emotion and tone.

It all seemed a bit weird like he was just going through the motions.

It's hard to believe that his heart is in it, the apology is the minimum, and he knows the other demands are not going to go away. I was actually a little shocked that the Doctrine of Discovery has never been repudiated. To a normal reasonable organization, they would walk away from such a doctrine as fast and as visibily as they could, but not the Catholic church.
We see again and again that the Catholic leadership considers that the idea of saving souls trumps any fight against worldly suffering.

He is and was just going through the motions. Trying to appease the indigenous for the horrors visited on them by the Catholic Church. I married a Canuck who, although Irish/English, grew up on a reservation and whose sisters both married Mohawks. I've heard first hand of the atrocities that went on. Forgive the Catholic Church? They don't. You'll find that most of the indigenous in Kanawake, Quebec are Episcopal.

The Almighty Seer should open up the vaults of the Vatican and give monetary restitution to the indigenous in Canada.
