The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has rejected a Ukrainian allegation that Moscow was behind the murder of a dissident Russian journalist in Kiev, calling it part of an anti-Russian campaign, according to Moscow media reports.... “Ukraine is becoming the most dangerous country for reporters,” the Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Revenko said in remarks carried by RIA Novosti, the state news agency. “The Ukrainian government can’t guarantee basic freedoms.”

Ukraine reveals it staged 'murder' of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko

Officials say Arkady Babchenko faked his death as part of inquiry into threats against his life... Apparently he had not even told his closest family members about the plan.

“Special apologies to my wife, Olechka, there was no other option,” Babchenko said to a room of visibly stunned journalists. “The operation was under preparation for two months.”

I was listening to various interviews with friends and fellow countrymen of him on the Today Programme and it was quite emotive. I was thinking how very dreadful it was for his wife. If I were his wife now I'd give him a good smacking:( What a horrible thing to do...and we know what happened to the boy who cried wolf...

he looks like a bit of a prat too...

Re: Just when you think you've seen everything

The major issue with events like this, and many others, is that the truth is rarely what you are being asked to believe.
This is even more so when it involves the Russia-Ukraine relationship.
Both sides are equally adept in attempting to blacken the reputation of the other.
From the shooting down of MH17 to the attempted assassination of the Skirpals we are asked to believe that Russia is at fault. This may be true, but doubts linger when you consider that Ukraine benefits from such bad publicity and in the case of the Skirpals might very well have had access to Novichok and as Malaysian transport minister Anthony Loke said recently on Wednesday (May 30) ' There is no conclusive evidence to confirm that Russia was responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17'.
This episode demonstrates all too clearly the games each is playing against the other and we should view statements and action from each with large pinches of salt.

Reports now say the wife was in on it after all.

Arkady Babchenko's fake murder: questions that need answering

One question not mentioned: What if, in retaliation, someone killed a Russian?

Thank you for this one Bristol! This man comes over as a real armpit! He's the sort of pompous twit that one has a dread of arriving at an airport and being stuck next to on a long haul flight...

Putin and his horrid gang are hardly charming...but put in a larger swathe of Kims and Trumps not to mention a few African potentates and it all starts to look depressingly 'normal'. I can't help but think that this sort of pantomime caper is going to just egg them on to more unpleasantness.

Have any of these people thought how much they might achieve through international diplomacy
