Re: Just a comment
Sometimes I see silly questions on here. For example here's one I read today, "Do you need a driving license in Canada"? I choose to ignore these postings, rather than say something nasty. There's enough of that as it is. Many peeps are stressed with emigrating, and afterwards when they get to Canada and have trouble settling etc. I use (or try to remember to) the search facility before posting a question. I try and be nice and help where I can, I've had a lot of support on here and appreciate it :)

So what if the question has been asked 100 times before - if you don't have time to answer it, then leave it to those who do. So what if the questions seems stupid to you - perhaps the person is not familiar with the Internet or with message boards etc. etc. so cut them some slack. There have been a few posts on here recently from newcomers complaining about snotty replies. If the question has been asked 5000 times before, surely a proper response might be to suggest that the poster searches for similar threads - and tell them how to do it. I know that there are instructions, sometimes newcomers don't even know where to find the instructions. Or just answer the question again. Is it such a big deal? I think if you don't have anything nice or constructive to say - then don't bother saying it! I would think it was very hurtful to be a newcomer asking a "stupid" question and getting a rude snotty response. And now I suppose I will get responses saying that their mission in life is not to be nice to people - that is their prerogative - I personally try to be nice most of the time. I always like your posts Liz you always seem so friendly and willing to help, more people should be like that. If your ever in Edinburgh your welcome for a cup of tea lol :D Emma x |

This is only a forum at the end of the day it's not the be all and end all. It isn't however a childs nursery school so due to human nature it's not going to be fluffy bunnies and lolly pops all the time. (sorry icemaiden) Being civil, and having some bloody respect for your fellow human beings no matter how you happen to judge their 'stupid question' or spelling ability, is simple, and costs nothing. Tbh I have been posting on various boards for almost a decade now and the snidenesses I have seen here go beyond anything I have seen before. The only point I agree with you on is in bold. This is only a forum. A place for people to exchange information and hopefully have a good time during; Granted personalities are what makes this place stand out but that is not an excuse to parade your ego around like it makes you a bigger or better person. I feel harsh now I've written this, but I have sometimes really been shocked at the undeserved treatment some people get. It certainly doesn't apply to anyone in particular and I've not just seen it in the Canadian forums either, but if you're having a bad day - grab a stress ball, go tenderise some meat, whatever. It shouldn't be brought here. edit: Macs are pretty, user-friendly, and more advanced than most PC's, but Majority Rules! Vive le PC! |

I have met people in person from this forum, I have never ever had the desire to do that on the aviation forum. So I guess I am saying that it all depends on your own personal experience and perspective. Cheers Steve |

I obviously dont read enough of the threads due to that other thing taking up my time, what is it now, ah yes my life!!!!!, because I honestly haven't read threads and thought my god thats outrageous. I would also like to add that I personally have not been insulting to anyone (other than to those I know well enough to take it in the manner it was meant). Ok there was once I may have suggested someones thread was boring  I am not advocating being insulting mean or nasty to people. I guess I'm just fed up with the threads moaning about threads, posts, the way people post etc etc etc. |

So I guess I am saying that it all depends on your own personal experience and perspective. Cheers Steve I've been around here for a while, and I've used the internet since before it was widely available to the public. Sometimes, the information you find is contradictory, even from what seem to be kosher sources. Webpages often get moved rather than updated but the old ones stay out in the virtual world. Sometimes you just use the wrong search terms (often enough I've looked for a previous post that I know exists but it takes several attempts to hit it). Sometimes you just want somebody to say "don't worry, I've been there before and survived" but can't think of a "good" question to start the ball rolling. If somebody really upsets you, use the ignore button. I have never got round to using it (though it has been tempting at times) as those that have been rude to me (in my opinion) have generally posted useful information elsewhere. Grow a thick skin (sarcasm can be quite entertaining to onlookers), be nice to other people, don't worry when people are not responding (it is not personal - they are not deliberately "dissing" you) and learn when to say sorry. It is amazing how much human interactions depend on body posture and facial expressions - not always possible to pick these up through a written medium. Oh, and don't stress about how other people choose to advertise sending/receiving karma, messages etc. In the big scheme of things, there is more to worry about, even in the virtual world. |
Re: Just a comment
I think everyone is just trying to get along and be as helpful as they can but sometimes, as in real life, people get up other's noses and it's just a matter of how you choose to deal with it.
One of the biggest problems in any written communication is that things sometimes get lost in translation - not just because the written word loses much of the emphasis that the voice and face bring to a conversation but also humour and, particularly the great British pastime of covert wit and comedy sarcasm or saucy remarks (and I do mean the genuinely funny, what makes us British humour type) can also be lost, which is a real shame (did I really say saucy? - how very 'Carry On' of me....ooooh matron!). This doesn't happen a lot but I have noticed that it has caused a couple of problems here when someone has misread a completely innocent remark made in one of these ways. Personally speaking I am soooo glad I found this site as it has been a great place to get advice (sometimes give some when I can) and the majority of people I have come across have been great so beers all round   :) :) |
