Globalisation was a buzzword for free trade and interdependence of nations. It's still sold as that but in reality it's a way of taking jobs from the west to maximise the super rich's profit. The west suffers, the east get exploited whilst the rich sit back and cream even more cash. What a time to be alive. The goal of the prevailing American Capitalism - as distinct from the largely Quaker version initiated in the UK's Industrial Revolution with its premium on paternalistic good works from profit - is that the 'shareholders' demand maximum return. The only way to do this is if they can export job to get labour costs to the lowest available. Globalisation is a thinly disguised 'race to the bottom'. I think that is around $2.80 per DAY - only a few living in very clement places could hope to get anywhere near that, certainly not those who need to eat regularly, have reasonable medical care and have to heat their homes. |
