HI IM LOOKING AT MY STACK OF TOOLS,WHAT TO TAKE?,WHAT TO GIVE AWAY? I HAVE A HINGE AND LOCK JIG AND WONDERING WHAT SIZE ARE THE STANDARD DOOR HINGES ? THE JIG IS FOR 76 AND 102mm HINGES.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU LEFT BEHIND AND REGRETED IT,OR ANYTHING I CANT GET OVER THERE THAT WE GET HERE?

Most doors come pre-hung. I just checked the Home Depot site and as far as I can tell they do not sell hinges!

I would bring any decent hand tools. Although they are generally cheap to replace most joiners seems to think Stanley tools are cut above the general quality available in the DIY stores here. Japanese cutting tools are the most prized.

Unless you're running on 110v site tools you'll need to buy new..
Bring all of you're hand tools, if nothing else you're used to using them..

Standard door hinges are 3" and 4" - which, I think you'll find, is what they are in the UK too (although they're called 76mm and 102mm because that's what the guvmint says they shall be called...). All the hardware stores sell them by the bucketload, although it is possible (maybe even usual) to buy doors pre-hung for new build and reno work. Bring your jigs.

I would concur with the above.

Lots of hinges available and you can buy door blanks to replace existing doors without having to buy the whole pre-hung setup. I did this not so long ago to replace the door to my garage.

Hi, seeing as this is all 'tool' talk, Mr brookel was wondering if British 110v site tools definitely work in Canada and is the round 3-pin site plug the same?
He has heard conflicting opinions about this so is not sure whether to ship or sell (he's a joiner):)

Thanks all,I will bring all my good hand tools and give the rest to the brother in law. I took a look at home depot and the power tools are cheaper than here, A top spec Dewalt sliding miter saw in screwfix is £663 and $630 at Home Depot! what a shame I cant bring over power tools I will be forced to go on a shoping spree !!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::

Not the guvmint; it's the European Commission. Treaty of Rome and all that. Imperial measurements are a technical barrier to trade, because the rest of the EU is metric. The UK got round it by converting the numbers, not the products.

I didn't say which guvmint, innit? Of course, the Commission isn't strictly speaking a government - but its directives are enacted by national governments. It was the UK government who passed the legislation that makes manufacturers comply with the EU directive on metric weights & measures.

You try and get all pedantic on my ass, Mr Souvenir sir, and I shall pontificate right back atcha ;)

On a less irritating note (I blame the heat and humidity...) the OP might want to have a drool at some of the specialist joinery tools at Lee Valley. I'm very much an amateur hack of a woodworker, but if I had the basic skills and/or the patience to improve them, I suspect I'd spend a lot of money there!

Iv just had a look,theres lots of good pricision tooling ! its a not for every day tools but I will be paying a visit for the more quality jobs I come across, thanks for pointing it out for me. David
