Hi,

My OH had a job interview today which went well. He had already met his 'would be' boss and then today met 2 of the Directors. He received an email from the HR person this afternoon saying that the 'next step' was to undertake his references and he has to do a personality test on-line.

We are confused as to whether this is a next step that they are doing to several candidates or whether he actually has the job pending references and test results.

In the UK he would probably have been told that he has the job pending references but we don't want to get our hopes up that this is the case here......would an employer be likely to get references and tests from a few candidates before making their final decision? His current employers are absolutely appalling and needs to leave ASAP so we are hopeful!

Thank you
Melanie

Im Canadian, my husband British. From talking to my husband, it sounds as if the 2 countries differ a bit on hiring practices. My opinion, being Canadian, almost always they check references, that is completely normal. However, that does not mean that you are guaranteed the job even if a positive reference comes back. Its often the case that there are several candidates for a job and a decision is made after all reference checks have been made. Hope that helps. Good luck, and don't give up!

Really, how TF would we know?

Didnt your mother tell you that if you have nothing usefull to say, then dont say anything? Does it make you feel big and clever that the OP hasnt been back after that reception, cos I'm not impressed.

To the OP, I think its unlikely that they would be checking references unless they was a good chance they were going to offer the job (assuming there is no problem with the references), but the suspense is killing me now!:fingerscrossed:

What a wonderful rebuke and it works too!

Well I had my first interview in the last 11 years and my first one here. It went terribly, so I will be consuming plenty of alcohol this weekend to blank it out like it never happened.

My sympathies, I had my first interview in 11 years and my first one here too!

1st interview, 2nd interview, presentation, then a computer competency test. 3 hours all in. I need a drink or two to get over that as well

Didn't have any tests but was interviewed by two sets of people. I plan on forgetting it all and never even walking past the building if I can help it. No alcohol in over 4 weeks but will have to give in soon or start going mental. The fire alarm went off at 5:30 am, didn't know what it was as it sounded like cow bells. Spending 2 hours waiting to be allowed back to my apartment just topped off the week.

Thank you all for your comments, well most of them anyway.

I am pleased that my husband did get the job! Not a minute too soon as his old employers were causing a lot of stress. He even gets 15 days holiday, which in England I would have laughed at as being far too few but here we are just grateful for anything more than 10!

Thanks again
Melanie

Congrats to your OH on the job. And to you for being somewhat less sensitive than our nanny/moderator feared.
