Jim Flaherty, dies at 64

Life and death is bigger than politics. Here's to a man who loved his country. Very shocking, very sad. |

There's widespread delight in this office so I suppose he was a sort of Canadian Thatcher.
Disagree with his views or political agenda all you want, but no one should ever be delighted over someone's passing. |

When Gerry Adams knocks off I'll almost certainly be pleased. |
Re: Jim Flaherty, dies at 64
I've never heard of him but why are all Canadian politicians fat?

In my opinion, it doesn't matter which party you support, there should never be glee over someone's death. He was a man who worked for his country. He was a father of three boys. He's someone's neighbour and someone's husband and someone's friend. He's still a person who had a life.

Re: Jim Flaherty, dies at 64
I thought he was a pretty decent politician, which is a rare thing indeed, you can't say he was corrupt although his support of Rob Ford did him no favours.
I did find it slightly creepy that he opposed CPP reform and died a few months before he could have claimed it. |

James Flaherty was on medication - prednisone (a steroid) for a serious skin condition called bullous pemphigoid. Side effects of predinisone include bloating.

Chretien wasn't fat. Trudeau wasn't fat. The false impression that they're all fat has been created by Harper and Ford, two bloaters, neither of whom allows room on the screen for anyone else.
If I were a religionist, I'd think God had an off day, and hit the latter when he was aiming for Harper. Let's be honest: Flaherty was just incompetent and very right wing, Pierre and Steve are pure evil. |

Pierre Poilievre isn't fat either. He's just a despicable person, even more so than Flaherty.

I dunno...If I was entitled to vote and I lived in Calgary West I'd consider voting for Stephen Harper. "The man" seems to be quite a solid PM.
I have no natural political home either in Canada or the UK though. |

I have no natural political home either in Canada or the UK though. I find the the local and provincial decisions and parties have more direct affect on my life then federal government ever has. Same in the US. I can't vote in Canada so I am not overly concerned which party is in power though. |
Re: Jim Flaherty, dies at 64
I think an awful lot of elections are won on the 'Lesser of Two Evils' ticket and the other cliche is 'you can't please everybody'.

While I am not a fan of Harper personally, I don't mind the party - I am all for the European trade deal he struck that will bring more goods into Canada from Europe, particularly cheese. I'm totally on board with that, I thought it was great.

This will then force makers of vehicles to compete even more and hopefully all vehicles will be on a certain equivalency of reliability and costs. |
