Oh, was there a fuss? I didn't see anything in the papers about it.

Just wait till Hugo Chavez succumbs to his illness, Im sure he too will become a saint in the eyes of the north american media. Not.

Really, when did Jack Layton become so feted? Its bizarre if you ask me.

He tended to remind me of a 'Jack Russell' terrier.....made a lot of noise, never would be big enough to make much of a difference to much of anything, but one was always aware of his presence, yapping the same message, tenacious in the face of adversity...living in the hope that one day, Canadians would all become Socialists....

But a State funeral?

It all seems completely OTT to me as well. I just can't see what he has achieve that deserves so much adulation.

Well, other than performing miracles?

Its just a shame it wasnt a useful miracle like turning water into oil (or vice versa), but people have been beatified for far less then getting the NDP to over 100 seats!

He smoothed some of the socialist edges off NDP policy, but other than benefiting from the implosion of the two other centrist, or centre-left, parties his only other contribution to national politics is splitting the opposition vote and allowing Harper a majority.

I won't be watching the funeral.

You may mock but he once gave my nan a signed copy of his book Speaking Out: Ideas That Work for Canadians, so he's pretty ace in my book.

Perhaps it's like a certain skit on a certain comedy show borrowing the title of a serious 9.00 TV program. Not. ;)

My OH walked past Roy Thompson Hall this evening and saw lots of stuff going on. She asked which famous act was playing...
Didn't go down too well it seems.....

Apparently he is now being called "our Di".

Got to love cradles, bless them.

Jack layton -RIP

Hi everyone,

Not sure if any of you were following the sad passing away of the late 'great' Jack Layton. I was reading up on him and watching all the programmes and some of his past interviews and rallies and from what I understand by the information and speaking to canadians and my relatives and the astonishing outpouring of grief among diverse canadians, Jack Layton was a very well respected, genuine and much loved personality, not your typical politician. He championed quite a few good causes

He seemed to be a champion of the people, the poor, the disabled, the minorities, oppressed and the unfortunate and he seemed to be a charismatic personality. He also helped his party become a credible opposition party.

He is perhaps would have made great Prime Minister in Canada if he had lived.
RIP Jack Layton.
