A balmy -24 at the moment (-37 with the wind). It was colder earlier. At one point, Ottawa was colder than the South Pole. We do get temperatures like this most years but not normally this early.
Then again, we don't typically get 120cm of snow before New Year.

To add to our cold weather woes, our furnace started playing up this morning. Good news is that the burner service people came out promptly and fixed it. The bad news is that the local Power Co is now instigating rolling blackouts because demand outstrips supply!

I just had to go outside to put the blue bin out. I gave my new gloves (Auclair Racing) a test run. A good purchase on my part. They are the dog's bollocks.

It made me laugh that the weather advisory this morning advised people to dress warmly, if they went outside. Go figure.

Just got this:
Bitterly cold Arctic air has established itself across Southern and Eastern Ontario. In addition a low pressure system near the Lower Great Lakes continues to generate moderate northeasterly winds. The combination of winds and Arctic air produced severe wind chill today with values ranging from minus 30 to minus 40. Conditions are expected to persist as a result severe wind chills are forecast for this evening and tonight.
It is advised to dress warmly and cover any exposed skin as much as possible when heading outdoors. At these extreme wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes.
Sod it, I'm stopping indoors in the (relative) warm - I have ice on the inside of my kitchen windows! Haven't experienced that since I was a kid in the UK. The result of single pane windows facing the incoming winds, brrrrrrrrrr. It is advised to dress warmly and cover any exposed skin as much as possible when heading outdoors. It is a miserable day. No sun, horizontal snow, temp highest of minus 20c. It's so frigging cold that i paid another 2c/litre to have someone pump the gas for me. I can hardly breathe when it's this cold.
Just glad we aren't getting a huge dump of snow too.

We've had double the snow we normally get by now. We also have 5 times as much snow "on the ground" as usual because all our precipitation has fallen as snow.
Past Decembers have usually had snow that I have cleared even though neighbours haven't bothered and then a combination of temperatures and rain have left us nice and clear while the neighbours had slushy stuff.
Right now most of my drive is looking like it did March 2011 when that winter dumped the most snow on us in my 8 winters here. I'll probably need to order a tractor/snowblower clearance again. I only had to do that then as we needed access to the garage to store some of my mother in law's stuff. Now I'll need it as there isn't much more space to push the snow. Two more snowfalls are likely to block the bottom of the steps.

Interesting how cold the east is getting this week, not even Edmonton is that cold right now.
Its +9 right now according to my thermometer in the window.
Some of these temps in Ontario and elsewhere are colder then the inside of my freezer......

For the first time in 6 years we finally succumbed and put our heating on
I walked to.meet a friend , had lunch and then walked back. My legs were on fire by the time I got back.
I just hope that my summer bribes have worked and that dispatch have kept the plane in the hanger when I fly on Saturday.
Walk rounds are not fun in this weather

Typical weather here in Penticton for this time of year. Not cold really - just nice for skiing!
