International Drivers license and the USA

Hiya - When I came to Newfoundland 5 years ago, we all know you go to motor vehicle and swap your driving license for the province we live in license (apparently it's illegal to have 2 licenses - DMV told me this earlier today).

So I'm hearing that in the USA, there is some new law that makes you have to have an International driving license, I'm not sure what that is, neither did DMV Newfoundland, but is my NL license an international license? Or...is my UK an international license? Or is it something completely different.

I think this is a very new thing as I've NEVER had a problem with my NL license and we go to the states every year.

I'm hearing that the police don't really enforce it, but the car hire companies wont let you have a car without one.

Any ideas?
