insects and other bitey things
 

OK , so we are heading off for a very nice vacation in NS at the end of the month. Starting in Halifax and driving the Cabot trail.

So what kind of nasty bitey insecty things can I expect in NS that time of year?

Am i going to have to douse myself in DEET?

I ask because my mother ( parents are coming also) has bad reactions to Mozzie bites and I haven't figured out the seasons for different insects yet :)

Don't know specifics for NS, but it is mozi season.....try to stay in full sun during the day....don't go looking for shady areas....the mozi's like the shady areas in the heat of the day. Have a look at trying to purchase a couple of MOZIBANS (google search it) I have found them very usefull. They are a little gadget which is battery operated and emits the sound of the male mosquito and the females who need the blood feed for their eggs stay well away.....they work for me without a doubt

Hmm , mozzie bites or full on sunburn , what an attractive choice to make :0

I'm more worried about being out during the day than using one of those plug in things at night :)

They shouldn't be too much of a problem in the daytime. Get some Muscol or Deep Woods Off spray if you are worried.
You will get the best views on the Trail if you drive it counterclockwise. That way you are on the ocean side of the road.
Enjoy the trip. If Ben has his ticket by then it's a beautiful flight too !! You could rent a plane and do it in style. :)

They have snapping turtles in NS. They bite harder than insects.

Its not a plug in thing....its something you put in your pockes or clip to your clothes

They have snapping turtles in NS. They bite harder than insects.

Not the flying ones that like to attack from behind !

Simon's suggestion of OFF! Deep Woods is the one I'd go for.
It works but make sure to spray ALL of your exposed bits..

Also, spray it on your clothes if they are reasonably snug as they bite through t-shirts and jeans. Carry the can of spray with you and dose yourself every once in a while. Make sure you cover your face, ears, neck and hair with some.
A wider brimmed hat will help with blackflies as they cluster around the top of the head mostly. This may sound silly, but a bounce sheet under your hat and hanging down your neck helps, too.

Snapping turtles only fly certain days of the year. Check with the locals as to when that is. Also, it you want to catch a snapper, be sure to remember they can bite all the way to their back legs. Western Painteds can't.
Be wary of dipping feet into creeks as the leeches are simply disgusting although they are great bait if you can stomach catching them with your legs..
