If your gonna be in the rental housing biz, learn the laws.

I came across this ad today for a house for rent, and caught my eye as it has a couple illegal things in the ad that are not permitted in BC.

First one is a landlord cannot ask for last months rent in BC, they can only ask for a damage deposit that cannot exceed 1/2 months rent, so in this case a max of $500.

Second one is it's not legal to discriminate against people on income assistance which in BC also includes those on disability, and to openly admit your discriminating against people is kind of stupid.

I didn't include the phone number in the ad, otherwise the entire ad is below.

"2 bedroom house in chilliwhack downtown area washer dryer big yard DO NOT APPLY IF you are on assistance or if you have no job we are looking for long term GOOD tenants we will require references and first and last month deposit call Abby "

They are in Chilliwack. What do you expect?

They can actually ask for a further 1/2 month deposit for pets.

When we were looking for rentals, we saw lots like this on Craiglist and Kijiji - probably about 10% of rentals at least have illegal terms.

Yes indeed on the pets. The ad didnt mention being pet friendly so I didnt think of a pet deposit.

I am always amazed on the amount of illegal things mentioned in ads. We are discriminated at times when looking for housing because of disability. Would help if the govt didnt make you disclose your on disability to the landlord.

Can you not report the discriminatory ads? Not sure to whom, but that's the way to effect change - if that is what you want.

I think people must get used to a lot of illegalities.

It's been a while but I've advertised vacancies previously and been asked if kids are okay.

As it happens, my newest tenant is a single mum on social assistance.

The best tenant I've ever had in my house in the UK is a single mother on assistance with a disabled child. Been in the house for 9 years so far.
