Being a millionaire isn't what it used to be. I reckon $10m would buy my retirement, $1m just wouldn't be enough for my expensive tastes.

At an average return of 3% and drawing $4,000 a month it should last 30 years. Given my age and the number of pies I have eaten it will probably be enough.

Where you getting 3% from?

Besides, there is tax and inflation to take care of. That $4k might sound like it's enough to live on now, but in 20 or 30 years? If you could find a $4k/mo indexed link income from that $1m - then yeah, I could see that.

$10m on the other hand, I could splurge $5m on a house, a couple of hundred on a nice car or two and then use the rest to live lavishly without working. It's not fair that I don't have it.

For a couple tax is negligible, even if you are too young to qualify for the age amount, and zero by year six if you have no other income. Yes, inflation is a concern but there is an assumption that you spend less as you get older - at least as long as pharmacare is around.

That said $10m would certainly be better.
