Funny you bring that up. I've just had a few beers with some oil/gas drillers.

Hardcore people, from Oklahoma. We slagged off most things on this planet. A skinny bloke with a silk tie and some big blokes with baseball caps. Go figure. I think I could quite easily become fond of everyday Americans.

Glad you found someone to play with

It's not Americans; it's their government that makes 'em look so darned bad and stupid and angry.

We soon established that (a) the stuff isn't used by the Wyoming companies for that the client thought and (b) only two of them are actually clients. I wonder about clients sometimes, I really do. After much dicking around with the two, I got agreement from both of them yesterday (Wednesday) to meet tomorrow (Friday). I then bought an obscenely expensive plane ticket. That was an ordeal in itself; my country of residence isn't the same as the billing address for my Amex.

This morning I got up at 3am. I flew from Ottawa to Chicago. I waited a bit, then I flew to Denver. I waited a bit, then I flew to Rock Springs WY, on what appeared to be a converted crop-duster. Rock Springs airport is very small (a handful of flights each day) and in the middle of nowhere. There is very little there. One of things that wasn't there was the hotel shuttle meant to be collecting me. It also has no taxis and no ATM. I was out of cash. The shuttle problem was eventually sorted, about an hour later, and I got to the hotel. I had a nasty feeling that I wasn't going to like what I saw when I opened up my email, so I went for a beer instead. Then I opened up my email.

I didn't like what I saw. One of the two guys I talked to just yesterday had changed his bloody mind and doesn't want to meet. This leaves me with a 7.30am meeting tomorrow and then nothing to do until I fly home at 6am on Saturday, arriving at 7pm. Rock Springs is an ugly nothing place and it's cold here. I can't even change my flights.

I'm narked.

Are you being paid while all this is going on?

I'd be narked if it was part of a holiday...... :sneaky:

I'm slightly less annoyed now because my meeting turned out well.

Here is my tip for the day. If you are used to living at or near sea level, when you go to somewhere 6,000 above sea level, don't drink tequila shooters with a gang of oil-patch guys. Just don't.

DO YOU HAVE A HANGOVER?!!

To get rid of said hangover, go back to the bar and have more tequila shooters. Hangover will vanish as if Paul Daniels waved his magic wand over you!

Don't drink tequila (or t'kill-ya) with a bunch of musicians the day before you go in to a full band production rehearsal.

(Don't share a bottle with just one person on a tourbus and the next day get taken out for a meal to a - wait for it - FISH restaurant!!!)

I do not think I wish to repeat the exercise today. Getting pissed at high altitude is not a great idea, particularly if you have to get up at 3.30am to spent the next 12 hours on several planes.

Don't drink anything with a bunch of very well paid oil/gas drillers who have been away from home for a while. The headache I had this morning did not match the small bar receipt I found in my pocket. I'm not sure who was buying but I do recall the barmaid regularly setting fire to the bar.

My new best friend "Bush" was remarkably restrained when I stated that (a) I didn't want to go to a strip joint and (b) his chances of getting into one might be affected by the fact that he was hammered. I'm glad he was restrained. At a rough guess, he is twice my body weight and about a foot taller.

She puts the frighteners on most people. She may be petite and look girly but she has a savage tongue and a capacity to harm people. Folk tend to pick up on that. Except for the pickpocket in Spain, who didn't pick up on it until it was too late. Ouch.
