If it's the caffeine that one needs, seems easier and cheaper to just take a caffeine pill and save the rest on coffee.

@Shard, cool link, this brand seems to be highly rated. |

I have one of these and it is great. I grind the beans fresh every day and the result is so much better than any of the coffee shop product, and much cheaper.

Doesn't anyone have coffee machines at work anymore?

But the real puzzle is why people arrive home with one. |

But the real puzzle is why people arrive home with one. not like the old times when folks would take a small jar of tea/coffee, sugar & milk to work - brew up with water from work. Then they became posh (a bit snobbish) & carried a 'thermos flask' of coffee/tea to work Many folks used to also brown bag it - now its a specialty coffee with a tagged sweet tooth item or a sandwich of some kind. Who is fooling who'? The way I see it, folks have too much money to waste these days trying to impress folks with their SC, SB or Tims coffee cups. If it was me - I would pick a discarded cup from SB or SC table or trash, take it home, wash it - fill the brew from home & walk into work flashing the seemingly 'snobbish' coffee ... but that's me, what do I know about 'cheap skate' From post #200, if my work has a machine like that - I would take my 'thermos' (or the SC, SB empty cup) to work & fill it just before leaving to return home. |

Marketing works, but the machine's only as good as the person using it. |

I own a cafe. That machine has served 20,000+ coffees this year.

Re: How much do you spend?
I have a Saeco bean to cup machine.
Actually I have two - one 110V Saeco one I bought here recently and one 240v Gaggia one which came with me from the UK. The 240V one runs off an inverter and still makes a better Espresso/Cappucino/Latte/whatever than the new Saeco one. The Saeco one also has a lower-pressure setting to make a drip-style coffee, eliminating the drip machine, but it was still a bad purchase. Not even worth the $600+taxes I paid. God help anyone who pays the 'regular' $1500 price  Saeco will be heading for eBay and the Gaggia will be coming back into use I think. These machines got me off the Starbucks visit several years ago, so they do pay for themselves. Now I've just got to get myself back in to the Porridge for breakfast routine and off the A&W Eggers on the way to work! |

So true. Hope your staff are well trained. I hate forking out good money at Cafe Nero or Costa and getting a cappuccino which is like a bad instant. Usually don't complain, though I should.

And the answer is...marketing.
The product (coffee) and snacky things are promoted and they have the roll up the rim thing and I see other stuff like hockey sponsorship. It's a big brand. So are other things. I see nothing that encourages consumption on the way to work or upon arrival at work. Lately they've been promoting the addition of dark roast but advertising the tin so you can do your own. Is this marketing encouraging you to make your own at work or at home not working then? |
