I'd forgotten this thread.

Has any sad bar steward actually counted the beans in the photos yet?

I said bar steward, not star nerd.

Anyway the beans form a two dimensional lattice, so it's quite a lot easier than a globular clustery thingy.

So you're absolutely sure there's not 4009 of them there?

As I've explained quite clearly, my original estimate was based on a mistaken notion that prolate spheroids would close pack in the same member to ensemble volume ratio as spheres. After correcting this schoolboy error (by remembering a paper I'd read in my yoof), I was able to estimate the number of beans on your family's dinner plates with unerring, almost frightening, accuracy.

Such is the scientific method. Do try to keep up. :)

Did you really count them?

Unfortunately for me, and predictably, I fell into Novo's trap last night and annotated one of the photos. The beans have been counted and the photo shows how they've been counted so a peer review can take place.

I'll post the photo up tonight (it's not on this PC). The count for "plate #1" + the half-bean left in the bean tin was 150.5, I think.

I'll get the remaining photos annotated sometime over the weekend... I'm sure you're all "loving" the suspense...
