The formulas being applied need some reworking.

I am just too hung over to do it.

Re: How many beans are in this tin?

BTW, when this issue has bean resolved (DYSWIDT?), we can move on to the more interesting and more fundamental question of "How many beans can fit on the head of an Angel?"

An issue which cannot be addressed by the prosaic and tedious technique of mere counting.

<If it becomes necessary to more closely define the country of residence of the angel, let's start with the canadian ones>

Here's a photo of the opened can. Looks like beanless soup. There might be time to have another guess/make another calculation before I post the evidence?

So how many beans are in a tin? Great question!

Longways half-bean in emptied can:

I'd forgotten this thread.

Has any sad bar steward actually counted the beans in the photos yet?

too many memories of counting stars in globular clusters. ( and don't ask Ben about trying to locate Kuiper belt objects!!!)

I said bar steward, not star nerd.

Anyway the beans form a two dimensional lattice, so it's quite a lot easier than a globular clustery thingy.

So you're absolutely sure there's not 4009 of them there?

As I've explained quite clearly, my original estimate was based on a mistaken notion that prolate spheroids would close pack in the same member to ensemble volume ratio as spheres. After correcting this schoolboy error (by remembering a paper I'd read in my yoof), I was able to estimate the number of beans on your family's dinner plates with unerring, almost frightening, accuracy.

Such is the scientific method. Do try to keep up. :)

Much as I agree with you, Its unfortunate that around here at least (as Im sure Novo would tell you himself) he is peerless;)

Unfortunately for me, and predictably, I fell into Novo's trap last night and annotated one of the photos. The beans have been counted and the photo shows how they've been counted so a peer review can take place.

I'll post the photo up tonight (it's not on this PC). The count for "plate #1" + the half-bean left in the bean tin was 150.5, I think.

I'll get the remaining photos annotated sometime over the weekend... I'm sure you're all "loving" the suspense...

I think, sir, you'll find plate #1 to contain 179 beans. I presume this one was the child's portion.

Are you adding partial beans together to count as whole beans, or is any lump / part of a bean considered a "bean" in this count.

I am resisting counting them myself. Perhaps christmasoompa could be roped in as a "neutral" referee:D

You're splitting beans here you know.

Aww come on, what you really wanted to say was an "impartial" referee. :p:lol:

Could we clarify how many beans make 5?

That's easy. I'm surprised that Greenhill hasn't already pointed out that the answer is 120.

This is because identical beans are indistinguishable from each other, and there are therefore 5! (5 factorial = 120) ways of filling the need to have 5 beans pop into existence.

Photo attached (I counted the whole beans in sections then scored the partial ones with a fraction rounded to 0.25 based on approximate size). I think it makes sense

"Official" count so far...
1. Empty Tin 0.5

2. DSC02101
29.25
20
6
26.25
69
Sub Total: 150.5

Total (Tin+"plate #1"(DSC0201)) = 151

You missed the other 28 under the slice of toast. And I see you're counting in decimal. How 19th century is that?

At the risk of thread drift, in a successful gambit to divert the OH from royal wedding programming, I've just been watching Bonny & Clyde on PBS.

Your latest photo reminds me of the final scene, presumably soon after the preliminary autopsy.
