Well - me and doh are at the mo British, and I say that purely because we were born and raised here, live by the laws and follow the 'British' way of life.

Now if we were happy to be British and live in the good old UK then we wouldn't be emmigrating imo.

We want to live and work in Canada as good citizens, hard workers and harder players. If that is classed as Canadian - then we will be Canadian.

I am sorry to say we are not proud to be British, it hasn't made us what we are - our parents did that. And all we want to do is carry out that work ethic in a country that has what we believe would complete our lives, and as before we will be Canadian.

We will adopt Canada as our homeplace and hopefully in the fullness of time it too will adopt us.

And I may upset people here but its the way both my oh and I feel, we don't want to 'team up' with other Brits abroad, I think thats what starts to segregate you from the rest of the 'locals' for want of a better word.

We've seen it so often here when people come to Britain, many integrate well because they want to however many find it difficult and therefore team up if you like with other people from there own country and alienate themselves from 'fitting in' and thats where problems start I believe.

So when we move the onus (sp?) is completely on us to adapt to the way of life in the area that we have chosen and we will do it because we love and respect the country and people there.

Please don't get me wrong i'm not saying we'll ignore other expats so don't for one mo think i'm ignorant but - oh well I hope you know what i'm trying to say!! :)

As for me I'm as hybrid as every other individual on this planet... on the way down the centuries from that African "Eve" whose genetic code nearly all of us share, some of the more recent ancestors were allegedly Spanish, Scots and Welsh.

I thought their were 6 of these eve's ??
As for me,born and raised in UK,:thumbdown:lived 21 years in switzerland:thumbup: now 2months Canada:thumbsup: what am i ?? a person end of story. All this nationality crap,whats the point of it. Should i be proud that i hold a British passport,whats there to be proud of??? Having read some of the posts on BE why people leave the UK,should i be proud??? NO WAY

Wow Mandymoochops, I could of written that!

I really want to feel patriotic, especially after what my Grandparents and their generation did for us to have a "free country" - but it's sad to say, I wouldn't feel a need to risk my own life for this country. I think Britain is loosing it's heritage, and the way of life that goes with it.

When we move, we want to find a place that we can become part of the community and a place to be proud of being associated with.

This is one of the things that irks me about Canadians, I feel like slapping them and saying be proud of your heritage!! Im British, i was born in England, bred in England, I use the word Arse and not Ass I am English!! We went to a british expats meeting in Toronto and there was this pathetic women there claiming to be british, eating fish and chips, ordering lager and lime, turns out she spent a fortnight there once and was actually American!!
This St Patricks Day Celine UK and I were in the downtown area, (not for the parade I might add) and there were thousands of ppl there of all ethnicities claiming on that day alone to be Irish LOL we nicknamed them the "ali wali dali top o' the mornin to ya's" LOL
Some ppl love that Canada has no identity, to me it just seems weak!

Don't forget that Canada is a multi-cultural society, so there isn't really a particular "Canadian" way of life. Different communities in Canada have different languages, cuisines, customs and social norms.

Presumably you're white, so you'll want to live in a white Anglo-Canadian community.

obviously we have a welsh link, but we've both chosen something from another country, we both agree that you "are" pretty much where you've spent most of your life.......so how come we've adopted these other countries....when we're telling others that it shouldn't be....subconscious?!?!?!?

Welshviking, Thats an interesting thought.

My name is based on me and my other half. Im the dragon half of it, he's maple. Kind of like a 'his N Her' name.

We often joke about me being a 'weladian' as right now I feel as though neither Wales or Canada is my home... but on the other hand. They BOTH feel like home.

i totally empathise with you about this though...weird isn't it?


i've really struggled with the language here though..but they're not a very socialble race...and very nationalistic (borderline racist)....6 months on friday is when we applied for our Oz visa....still nothing:curse: can't wait to leave

I've been living in Canada for 3 years now, On Visiting visas. Although I have adapted to life here. I dont think it would officially feel like home until I can work, get a doctor and can travel without any hassle. lol

Im an 'inbetweenie'!
